Story (MS WORD)
American short story
A short story is a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format.
This format tends to be more pointed than longer works of fiction, such as novellas (in
the 20th and 21st century sense) and novels or books.
Short story definitions based upon length differ somewhat even among professional
writers, due somewhat in part to the fragmentation of the medium into genres.
In a House Besieged
In a house besieged lived a man and a woman. From where they cowered in the
kitchen the man and woman heard small explosions. “The wind,” said the woman. “The
army,” said the man. The woman wanted to go home, but she was already home, there
in the middle of the country in a house besieged.
