INTRODUCTION
The Practicum Program
“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”
-Bob Marley
The Practicum Program is one of the major requirements for the completion of
undergraduate program in the College of Business Administration and Accountancy
(CBAA). The trainee must render at least 320 hours to apply the knowledge and skills
that the trainee learned in the four corners of the classroom. It will also serve as training
before entering the concrete world of business. The trainee should not only complete 320
hours, not just to finish the program, but also to gain new information, have a proper
behavior, sensible decision making and boosting confidence in preparation for the future.
The primary reason for this practicum program is to give the trainee a heads up to
the real thing happening in the work place that may not be seen or learn in the academics.
It also gives idea and hands-on training on how the workplace functions in their separate
assignments. It’s a kind of practice where the trainee can showcase their abilities to stand
on their own and was able to show off their capabilities as an individual.
Before leaving Central Luzon State University (CLSU) for the training, the
trainee is obliged to have orientation about responsibilities that the trainee may have
during the training. She is required to have a training on how to answer telephone calls,
how to use photocopying machine and telefax, and other basic tasks.
As a prerequisite of the practicum program the trainee must accomplish these
following documents: endorsement letter, application for practicum, certification of units
earned for practicum, waiver, medical certificate, and location map.
Then after the on-the job training, she will present all the things they have learned
about the organization. This way, the educators will be able to find out if she truly
learned something from the program. Their hands-on experience won’t just be confined
in the paper but into their minds as well.
Importance of Practicum Program
The importance of the practicum program to the students is that it builds up the
student-trainees interpersonal and scholarly abilities improve their personalities and
figure out how to adjust to their workplace. Likewise, it will help them express their ideas
and skills in their business course. This will be an open door for them to show their
capabilities, prove that they are prepared to confront the business world and experience
how to work viably and productively.
Being one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the country, CLSU,
includes On-the-Job Training (OJT) on the curriculum of every course in the university.
One of the courses offered that requires OJT is the Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration. Through OJT, the university is able to measure the knowledge, skills,
performance, and learning effectivity of every student in their chosen field. OJT also
assists the students to associate themselves with professionally driven, well-respected
organizations by pursuing a challenging, responsible, dynamic and rewarding career, and
applying their academic knowledge, expertise, skills, and enthusiasm; which will assist
their career development and contribute effectively to the progress of the organizations
and the society as well.
In order to have a competitive edge after graduation, the students have to conduct
their OJT in an environment full of well-trained and good-mannered professional
employees. In this way, the trainees will be groomed to be alert, skilled, and effective in
their performances to exert effort for quality in the chosen field with devotion, focus,
positive approach, cheerful attitude and enthusiasm. For that reason, the trainee chose
ABS-CBN Shared Service Center to conduct the internship. Being qualified to the
characteristics of a company where a student must conduct OJT, the trainee is confident
that the said company will help and give the trainee a better and learning experience in
facing the real world in the future.
BACKGROUND OF THE FIRM
Overview of the Industry
Based on ABS-CBN Corporate website, ABS-CBN is one of the leading
information and entertainment multimedia in the Philippines. The company is involved in
television and radio broadcasting and other related business. It produces a wide variety of
engaging, world-class entertainment programs that are aired on free-to-air television
(TV).
In the face of changing governments, despite natural disasters, and amidst rapidly
evolving technologies, ABS-CBN remains steadfast in its commitment to serve the
Filipino. The organization is continuously evolving to provide better service through
radio, free TV, digital terrestrial TV, cable TV, film, movie, music, publishing, online,
events, licensed products, cash remittance, and various advocacies.
Based on an article in Inquirer.com wrote by Miguel R. Camus last August 2017,
the two biggest broadcasting networks in the country, ABS-CBN Corporation and GMA
Network Inc., both suffered revenue and net income declines in the first semester of 2017
compared to the same period last year.
Though ABS-CBN’s revenues are more than double those of GMA Network, both
companies’ net income is almost the same. ABS-CBN also invests more than GMA
Network.
It’s harder to figure out who’s leading in terms of ratings and audience share. Not
only do the two broadcasting companies rely on different monitoring agencies, they also
provide different indicators. ABS-CBN relies on Kantar Media and cites nationwide
figures. GMA relies on Nielsen Television and cites numbers covering only the country’s
urban areas.
Based to an article of Miguel R. Camus of Inquirer, ABS-CBN claims dominance
in the whole country but GMA asserts the lead in urban areas, especially Metro Manila
and surrounding areas.
History of the Firm
Based on Wikipedia, television was introduced in the Philippines in 1953 with the
opening of DZAQ-TV Channel 3 of Alto Broadcasting System in Manila. The station
was owned by Antonio Quirino, the brother of the incumbent Philippine president, who
was set to run for re-election the following year. The station operated on a four hour-aday schedule and telecast only over a 50-mile radius. This television station was later
bought by the Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN) which started operating radio
stations in 1956. CBN was owned by the Lopezes who were into various business
concerns. The acquisition signaled the birth of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network, now
considered one of the major broadcasting companies not only in the Philippines but also
in Asia.
ABS-CBN Shared Service Center Pte. Ltd (SSC) was first operated in the country
last 2009. It is a captive service provider for ABS-CBN Corporation and its local,

authority of the company to share good signal of network all over the island of the
Philippines.

Figure 2 shows, the structure used by Financial Reporting Department of ABSCBN Shared Service were functional organizational structure. Functional Organizational
Structure is a type of structure where people are group based on their field of
specialization. Team leader sphere-headed the group with the same field specialization or

With this kind of organizational structure, it is easier for the top management

performance. Employees have a greater chance to be promoted in higher position in the
same functional group. It will definitely motivate the employee to work hard because of
the opportunity to be promoted. It will also give long-term benefit to the company
because of the loyalty that the employee may give.
The organizational structure of Financial Reporting Department starts with the top

The trainee has different transportation choices in going to the company. She
usually rides in a bus or van from Novaliches going to MRT Quezon Avenue Station. It
will take her an hour or two to be in the company. Sometimes, when the traffic is really
heavy chose to ride in MRT from Balintawak Station to Quezon Avenue Station. The
trainee usually takes one to two hours traveling time since the trainee stayed in Bignay,

On Figure 3, office layout of 5th floor of ELJ Communications Center is shown. It
is occupied by Financial Reporting Department. The figure shows where the trainee has
been assigned. The trainee is assign in Ex-Deal Team under Assets Accounting division.
The office is spacious enough to be dwell in by the whole department. There are
many rooms available for employees. They have their own spaces to be able to do their
works efficiently and effectively. Positions of the equipment are also properly set.
Facilities all over the floor is maximizes by the employees. The Aquarium sets as
the conference room of the department. Several huddle rooms for the teams get together
and close meetings. There are also two pantries that are very facilitative. Elevators make
the routing task of the trainee easier. And the comfort rooms are clean and spacious.
Overall, the office layout are properly arranged and maintained by the company.
It focuses in comfortability of the employees and it has a good working environment.
Facilities
In order to run a business, one must have a human resource. However, these
employees must also have the right tools, supplies, and equipment in order to do their job
effectively and efficiently. SSC has the following facilities and equipment, enough to
meet the needs of their employees, customers and the general public. SSC is good to have
enough meeting rooms that may be used by the different divisions. Having many
divisions in the department that employs 10 to 20 employees per division really requires
many meeting rooms in case the schedule of the employees gets jammed up. The pantry
and production rooms, however, must be renovated into larger rooms and the files in the
storage rooms must be stocked properly to avoid loss of track of the files. The pantry, if
rebuilt larger, can accommodate greater number of employees at a time.

TRAINING
Hours Worked
One of the requirements of the course that the trainee needs to accomplish is to
render 320 hours of training. The OJT agreement starts from September 1, 2017 up to
December 1, 2017. The trainee is reminded to work for a minimum of eight hours a day.
However, if in any instance that the trainee needed to render more than eight hours, such

trainee is permitted to work overtime provided that the team leader or the supervisor is
present in the interim. The latter is only allowed to report to the office from Mondays to
Fridays, 9’oclock in the morning until 6 o’clock in the evening. But if required to have
overtime the approval of the department manager is again necessary. The trainee is not

ABS-CBN compound.
The number of the trainee’s work hours are documented and approved by the
immediate supervisor, Department Manager and HR account officer. The trainee
completed the required number of hours which is equivalent to 320 hours within 38 days.
Having been overwhelmed with gratitude, the trainee allotted a day to thank the people
who gave assistance and took part in the latter’s OJT experience in ABS-CBN SSC.
The hours of work were recorded using daily time record provided by the HR
department of ABS-CBN SSC. The DTR is signed by the immediate supervisor,
department manager and HR account officer. Aside from DTR, attendance was also
recorded by the use of Full Time Equivalent(FTE) tracker and a blue book provided by
the College of Business Administration and Accountancy of Central Luzon Central
University wherein the trainee will sign.
Tasks Performed/Responsibilities Assumed
The trainee was assigned at the Exchange Deal Team of Financial Reporting
Department. She was trained to do office work that is intended to inform and hone skills
of an individual. Such tasks involved record management, monitoring, data encoding,
document routing, paper processing, claiming supplies and many more.
Record Management
In Financial Reporting Department, documents of all transactions happening
within the firm are properly recorded. Since the trainee was part of the Exchange Deal
Team, shefocuses mainly in filing documents or contact of sponsors of the ABS-CBN.
The team is responsible in monitoring commercials and processing Ex-deal NonCommercial Agreement Form (ENCAF) and Ex-deal Non-Commercial Consumption
Form (ENNCF). The team must have a copy of both forms and attachments.
The trainee was assign to have a copy and manage the master list of the ENCAFs
and ENNCFs. The Non-Commercial forms are in different cabinets so it is easier to
check it out for liquidation. ENCAFs are sorted by shows while ENCCFs are sorted by
date. The trainee named all the cabinets from Box 1 to Box 7 and the folders by shows
and dates. The trainee makes sure the contingency of everyone in the team.
Ex-deal forms are given by the representative of the shows and TV Production
staff for validation and processing. As part of Record Management, the trainee
photocopies the forms and its attachments. After photocopying the forms, a pink copy
should be detached from the original copy and that will be attached to the carbon copy of
the attachments and will be filed for proofs. And the forms will be filed on its respective
folders and cabinets.
Monitoring
Exchange deal or Ex-Deal Team is responsible for monitoring all of the sponsors
of the firm’s celebrities and the show itself. The trainee was tasked to watch the show and
input the name or brand of the sponsors while the show aired in national television. The
sponsors are being acknowledged either verbally or the logo is flashed on screen during a
segment or during commercials. The trainee monitored shows by date through the use of
a website or a database wherein the latter was able to access the shows of ABS-CBN.
This website or database is considered highly confidential and can be exploit by Ex-Deal
personnel only. The trainee also took down the airing date, how the sponsors appear, on
what show or segment it appear, whether the sponsors are verbally acknowledged or not,
the person who acknowledged the sponsor and most importantly the duration it aired in
national television.
There are two kinds of monitoring; the first monitoring and the second
monitoring. In the first monitoring, the show that should be watch are Umagang Kay
Ganda, Magandang Buhay, It’s Showtime, TV Patrol for weekdays and for weekends
Salamat Dok, Matanglawin, It’s Showtime, ASAP, TV Patrol, Little Big Shot, Rated K
and Gandang Gabi Vice. The trainee must also watch May Puhunan and Red Alert every

monitoring must be watch except May Puhunan and Red Alert. It also consists of
teleserye on Primetime Bida namely Ang Probinsyano, La Luna Sangre, and A Love to
Last/ The Good Son. The monitoring was used alternatively.
Data Encoding
In Ex-deal team, they are collecting all the copies of ENCAFs and ENCCFs for
their documentation. The trainee was asked to encode selected information about Ex-deal
forms such as date received, brand name, show, airing time and duration. This
information will be kept for the daily basis of all the agreements.
Aside from encoding the agreement forms, the trainee was also assigned to
encode all the sponsors that have been monitored in Dalet website. The date, spot-type,
the show, sponsor’s name or brand, the person who acknowledge the brand verbally, time
starts and ends and the duration. All of these should be inputted because it will set as an
asset of the company. The trainee predetermines all the information by date the show was
aired.
Documents Routing
In all forms designated in Ex-deal, there should be a receive date and sign from
the TV production department and representative of every shows. The trainee was asked
to route the documents for receiving and signature.
Before filing the forms, copies of all the parties should be appropriately
distributed. It is essential for them to have the copy of the agreement between ABS-CBN
and the sponsors.
Communication
There are instances that the trainee must answer the phone calls in behalf of the
supervisor. The trainee stayed in the area and answer phone calls mostly from TV
production department asking for the copy of either ENCAFs or ENCCFs. All the
requests and concerns are accurately noted and acknowledge once the supervisor come
back.
There is also an instance that the trainee received documents and counter sign
beside the supervisor’s name. The trainee will take full accountability to all the
documents that have been received.
The trainee also takes part in the role of liaison personnel. Mostly, whenever the
document is for pick up or for delivery. The trainee delivers the documents to the
department of the requestors. In this task, the trainee gain new friends from other
departments.
Reprographics
Almost all the trainees have to know basic knowledge in photocopying and
scanning documents since it is the primary task that they may encounter in their
practicum program.
The trainee was asked to photocopy all the documents needed to be filed for
evidence of receiving it. Moreover, the trainee also scanned some documents such as
proposals and accountability letters. Materials used such as papers should be provided by
the team.

printer, an employee or supervisor should give the trainee permission to use the device by
tapping their employee’s ID.

the work outside school. It also gives a chance for the trainee to meet new people with
different personalities and behaviors. The trainee believes that the people you will know
have its own purpose in one’s life. It doesn’t come and go. It’s up to the trainee if how
she will handle or deal with it.
In almost three (3) months of stay of the trainee in ABS-CBN SSC, she enhanced
her skill in profiling people which she learned from her past job in a Business Process
Outsourcing (BPO) company. The trainee made an effort to profile the people around her
and observed their behaviors. For that, it’s easier for her to communicate and deal with
the people around.
Fortunately, all the people that the trainee had encountered are now her good
friends.

the advance machineries in the department.
HUMAN RELATIONS AT WORK
Relationship with Supervisor
The supervisor stands as the primary mentor of the trainee in the company. A
good working relation with the supervisor will definitely affect the performance of the
trainee even after the OJT. Professionalism, knowledge and general understanding must
attained by the trainee that can only be taught by a supervisor.
A supervisor has the ability to reflect the personalities and capabilities through
observing. It is because they need to know everything about their employee or trainee
especially when it will affect the workforce of the team. Rest assured the trainee is
absorbing all the lessons and realizations in every job. They also guide the trainee in
every task and make sure that they are doing it right.
A supervisor will always be a strong motivation in working properly or doing the
job right. They are trained to shape one’s personality and helping the trainee give out
their capabilities to be the best version of themselves.
Relationship with Employees
Employees serve as the spice on the trainee’s journey. Since the trainee has been
part of ABS-CBN, an entertainment company, the employees set as the best companion
of the trainee in the office and outside the office. They tour the trainee around ABS-CBN
compound and introduce her to some of the local artists in the country. The trainee really
enjoyed every single moment shared with the employees especially when they are routing
studios and watching live shows.
The employees are so accommodating and approachable whenever the trainee has
questions or doubts. They’ve contributed so much learning and proper procedures in
doing the job efficiently and effectively.
The trainee makes sure that she will give equal respect to all the employees of
ABS-CBN regardless the position and what department they belong. The employees of
ABS-CBN are very friendly to the extent that they give smile even they don’t really
know the person.
Relationship with Co-Trainee
The co-trainee of the student-trainee was from De La Salle Univerity. She’s
taking Bachelor of Science in Marketing. She’s been with the trainee since Day 1. It’s
hard at first to communicate with her. As the time went by, they started to crack jokes
with each other, managed to help each other to a certain task that makes their work easier.
For a short period of time that they saw and worked with each other, they already treated
each other as friends.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
Before the Practicum
Before the practicum, the trainee had encountered problems. One of the problems
that the trainee encountered was when she’s assuming a company to work in. The
company assured the trainee that she will be given an available spot for in marketing
department. The trainee went to the main office to report but unfortunately the said that
the spot was not available anymore. The trainee obliges to look for another company for
her internship. The trainee really wants to be part of an entertainment company so she
passed resume to a record label company just like the first company she applied in. While
waiting for the call of the record label company, the trainee passed another resume to
ABS-CBN. After 3 days, ABS-CBN called for an interview and it was a smooth flow
from there.
During the Practicum
The trainee experienced the difficulty in building good relationship with her cotrainee. As the days went by, they realized that they had different opinions and attitude
because there were times when they argue with some things, reasonable or not.
The trainees also did not get a proper orientation from the company that makes it
hard for them to work with unfamiliar tasks like identifying the different spot-type of the
sponsors. That’s why the trainees were sometimes confused on the task given. During the
conduct of OJT, student-trainees also had a hard time in dealing with technical problems.
Student-trainee was having a hard time to use the photocopying machine because it was
too confusing to tolerate. But as time goes by, the student-trainee mastered it already and
can handle the machine properly.
CONCLUSION
Experience will always be the best teacher in the world. An experience does not
fade, especially, if that experience develops and enhances the individual. Training is one
of the practice tools that can give the student-trainee new learning and experience, and a
helpful way to expose the students into different aspects of life.
The trainee concludes that the practicum program has done its purpose, which is
to prepare students and to give them a preview of the real working world. The practicum
program was truly useful in enhancing the students into various perspectives, similar to
personality and aptitudes advancement. It changed the students positively. These
experiences made the students become ready for a new chapter of life, which is a more
serious and complicated job. Additionally, this OJT proved that the trainees are ready to
take serious work and responsibility in the future.
Trainee has learned how to work under pressure and adapt to the working
environment. In almost three months, the trainee has been nurtured to be more matured
and responsible individuals who can take on greater responsibilities and bigger
challenges not just in the corporate world but in life. The experience at ABS-CBN SSC
has sharpened them in every aspect and equipped them for the bigger battlefield to face.
In addition, the trainees were able to enjoy the 322 hours of training in the
agency. It was not a waste of time and money because of all the learning gained. All of
the hours worked had been an extraordinary and worthwhile experience for the trainees.
Moreover, the trainees were able to feel appreciated for all the efforts made.
Every good work was acknowledged by the supervisor. Those appreciations made the
trainees feel proud and strive to improve.
RECOMMENDATION
For the Practicum Program
For the practicum program, the trainee suggests the extension of the agreed 320
hours training of the students to 400 hours (50 days). This will extend the time spent by
the trainee in the agency.
Additionally, the trainee also recommends providing a list of cooperating
agencies for each major where they can apply their concept learning from the academe.
This will help the students in fully utilizing the skills and knowledge acquired from their
chosen field. If possible, the College must also screen the cooperating agencies. The
College may also allow the students to conduct their internship in an agency where the
student will surely learn and be exposed with the real business world.
Furthermore the trainee also recommends the college to train the students, if
possible, with the latest models of machines that they are expected to use during their
OJT. If the acquisition of latest models of machines is not possible, the trainees
recommend the College to at least train the students virtually or in simulation manner.
For the Future Trainees
The trainee recommends the future student-trainee to not focus on one agency or
company alone and prioritize some company in order to lessen the time spent in finding a
company. The future trainees may prepare to submit numerous applications to different
agencies for contingency purposes. The trainee also recommends the future trainees to
conduct an advance search of their prospective companies for them to have enough time
to prepare all the necessary documents before starting their internship.
In addition, just look for a company that will suit your interests and make sure
that it will help the future student-trainee to grow as an individual.
