I was the only person he let touch him, feed him, or give him medication. The idea for PeriChair came as a result of needing to make things easier for myself, but more importantly, to make him feel less vulnerable - both physically and emotionally. I was tested during those years. But nothing tested me more than when we were in the bathroom. The bathing and toileting process was the toughest part of the day for me and the most anxious part of the day for him. My bathroom and hallway were cluttered with all your “necessary” bathroom safety equipment. Unfortunately, they didn’t make things easier and we both struggled daily. Even with all this “safety” equipment, we didn’t feel any safer. Like anyone, he felt vulnerable and exposed during certain parts of cleaning – while I was filled with anxiety and afraid for him any time he had to stand or be transferred. I knew there had to be a better way… That is where the idea for PeriChair came about. Each design decision was made to fix the inherent flaws with traditional equipment. The idea to provide two safety handles by allowing the end seat to flip up came from watching my father struggle to reach for anything that would provide stability as I bathed him. The idea to have an open seat cushion came from the difficulty of having to clean hard to reach areas and wanting to give people the ability to clean themselves.
