Visual and Multimedia Elements
There are different elements that make the text come alive and contribute
to the reader’s understanding. Visual elements are included in the text to
help the readers ‘see’ what they’re reading. These include:
•
•
•
•
pictures
drawings
comics and cartoons
diagrams
Multimedia elements combine more than one type of medium, typically
in digital form, and other technology. These elements help the reader use
sight, sound, and sometimes even other senses to experience what they’re
reading. Examples of multimedia elements include:
•
•
•
video
audio recording and sound effects
interactive images
5
So, how can these help you better understand what
you read? Let’s find out!
Clarifying Meaning
Have you ever read a comic before? While Superman and
Wonderwoman are helping mankind fight villains, the pictures in the comic
panels are helping readers better understand the story.
Source: https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/OCT130158
Visual and multimedia elements can help readers clarify meaning while
reading in many ways. Visuals or interactive images help the reader
understand the vocabulary being used in the text. For example, if you didn’t
know about kryptonite, a picture of the rock and what it does to Superman
would let you know that it hurts him.
Source: https://screenrant.com/superman-new-kryptonite-rainbow-kill-dc-comics/
Visuals or a video presentation of a text can clarify what a character is
feeling or thinking through their facial expressions and body language.
Additionally, these elements can help you understand the order of events in
a text or understand what an event looked like when it happened.
6
Let Us Practice
Test I
DIRECTIONS: Read the story and identify the visual elements. Explain how
you have a better understanding of the text because of the visual elements.
Copy the table and fill-in your answer. Number 1 is done for you.
The Ant and the Grasshopper
Aesop
One summer’s day a grasshopper was hopping
about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An ant
passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he
was taking to the nest. “Why not come and chat with
me,” said the grasshopper, “Instead of toiling and
working in that way?” “I am helping to lay up food for the
winter,” said the ant, “and I recommend that you do the
same.” “Why bother about winter?” asked the
grasshopper. “We’ve got plenty of food at present.” But
the ant went on its way and continued its toil. When
winter came, the grasshopper had no food and found
itself dying of hunger while it saw the ants distributing
corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the
summer. Then the grasshopper knew: It is best to
prepare for the day of necessity.

Let Us Reflect
Some stories, passages, phrases and the like are made up
only of written words. Readers have to imagine what is going
on by creating images of the characters and the setting on
their minds. Other reading materials, however, include visual
elements—drawings or photos that readers can see.
Sometimes, these are even made into films or online activities
that include multimedia elements such as sounds and
animations. These visual and multimedia elements affect
how readers interact with and respond to the story. With this,
learners like you in this digital world should utilize all these
elements in order to create a deeper understanding of the
text.
12
Let us enhance
1. The illustration
provides the actual
emotion of the child
which is being sad
because his father just
left. I can see it from
the boy’s eyes looking
at his father leaving
from the house.
2. It would be difficult
for me to know what
the boy is feeling
without the illustration
because it was not
being mentioned in the
text how the boy looks
like when his father
left him.
