I am a senior learning designer, content
developer, and structural editor with nearly
ten years of experience in e-learning. I have
structured and developed a range of engaging
and meaningful online learning solutions.
Despite constraints of time and technology,
my creativity and methodical approach has
lifted every project off the ground successfully.
My strength lies applying a process-driven
mindset alongside a sensitivity to the wider
systems and operations that shape project
success. Therefore, I use dual-lens approach
that considers both:
How individuals learn (cognitive science)
How learning fits into larger systems
(systems thinking)
My design practice is rooted in the values of
inclusivity, transparency, and accessibility.

Project: Siyalingana:
Promoting Gender
Equality in Early

Development
Kashief Gamieldien
Portfolio
Client: VVOB (Flemish Association for
Development Cooperation and Technical
Assistance), an NPO aiming to improve
education in developing countries.
Project: Redevelop a blended learning
programme that teaches Grade R educators
across South Africa the theory and practice
of gender-responsive pedagogy.
The programme has three components: an
online course on Moodle, facilitator guides
and presentation decks for in-person
workshops, and graphics for WhatsApp
messages shared during the programme.
A key goal was to create an interactive
online course while prioritising accessibility
for mobile-first users new to online learning.
We identified Canva as a tool for
developing the materials for the
workshops and WhatsApp
messages. The documents could be
distributed easily and the client
would be capable of updating
content after the project.

Project: Tobacco
Taxation 101
Kashief Gamieldien
Portfolio
Client: The Research Unit on the Economics
of Excisable Products (REEP) is a research
unit at the University of Cape Town (UCT). It
focuses on the economics of tobacco,
alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages
(SSBs), aiming to inform public policy.
Project: Transform a set of videos into a
synchronous online course using UCT’s
Amathuba platform (built on Brightspace).
The course explains the rationale and best
practices for tobacco taxation. It’s aimed
at policymakers and civil society members.
Previously, REEP delivered the course
through in-person/live presentations. An
online course would allow participants to
engage with the complex and technical
content at their own pace, while reducing
the resource demands on REEP.
We identified Canva as a tool for
developing the materials for the
workshops and WhatsApp
messages. The documents could be
distributed easily and the client
would be capable of updating
content after the project.

Tobacco kills around

Tobacco use is the leadingcause of
preventable deaths globally—it claims
8 million lives each year. Tobacco
taxation is the most effective mechanism
for reducing tobacco consumption and its
associated health burden worldwide.
Government policies
that increase tobacco
prices and make
tobacco products less
affordable save lives.
Lower death and disease
The evidence indicates tax-led price increases are the most
impactful and cost-effective measures for reducing tobacco
use and saving lives.
These policies work because increasing the excise tax
encourages smokers to quit tobacco use and discourages
young people from taking up smoking. It is important that the
tax increase applies to all tobacco products to prevent people
from switching.

The revenuepotentialfrom taxingtobacco products is huge
and is especiallysignificant for countries with high tobacco use.
Based on available data on the price and taxation of cigarettes, it
is estimated that excise taxes generated a worldwide total of US$
361 billion in revenues in 2018, including US$ 162 billion in
revenues for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Despite being the single most effective tobacco control measure,
tobacco taxation is largely underutilised as a policy mechanism.

Project: The Jackson
Laboratory Teaching the
Genome Generation (TtGG™):
Human Genetic Variation
Virtual Lab Curriculum
Client: The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an
independent, non-profit biomedical research
institution based in the USA.
The learning assets progressively build
understanding of the genetic analysis
process.
Project: Develop a genomics-focused
learning pathway for JAX on LabXchange,
aimed at high school learners. The project
involves nine interactive learning assets,
including a simulation.
The simulation would be designed to depict
a laboratory environment for learners
without access to lab facilities. It would also
prepare learners who could apply the
research protocol in a real lab.
We identified Canva as a tool for
developing the materials for the
workshops and WhatsApp
messages. The documents could be
distributed easily and the client
would be capable of updating
content after the project.

Project: Racial
Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion in Science
Education (RDEISE)
Client: Based at Harvard University,
LabXchange (LXC) is a free online platform
for science education. RDEISE has been a
flagship project for a number of years
We would have to leverage LXC’s unique
platform features to design experiences that
foster critical thinking, reflection, and
learner agency.
Project: The goal was to collaborate with a
team of academics in STEM to develop
learning materials that address racial
diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM.
Developing the content library was an
iterative process that required ongoing
stakeholder engagement to ensure integrity
and relevance.
We identified Canva as a tool for
developing the materials for the
workshops and WhatsApp
messages. The documents could be
distributed easily and the client
would be capable of updating
