Valedictory Address
Unity in Diversity: Quality Education for All
Look around you and you will see that no two persons are alike. Each has a different face shape… a different pair of eyes… and a unique skin color. Not all of us share the same opinions. Not all of us adhere to the same religious beliefs.
We are distinct from one another. We look different and we lead different lives. We did not come from a single prototype. We are not merely just reprints of a master copy. Each of us had been meticulously conceptualized by our Creator. Every tiny detail had been well thought out before we were expertly brought into being and eventually sent out into this world to accomplish our own individual missions.
We, however, are all here in this very place for a parallel purpose, something that is no different from the person sitting next to you—to learn. Each of us has the same thirst for knowledge. Every day, we would excitedly carry our bags and enter the gates of this institution with the intention of knowing more things than we did yesterday. Despite our differences, we coexist in this tiny community we consider our second home, getting answers to our countless questions and making extraordinary discoveries all together. This only proves that education knows nothing about our differences. It does not care about gender or ethnicity or age or social status. As long as you carry in your soul the desire to learn, fulfill your dreams, and someday make a difference, you are more than welcome to thrive in school.
In school, we are all equal. We should be. We must be. We deserve equal chances notwithstanding the respective circumstances we were born into. We should be able to exercise our right to education regardless of what we are and where we came from. We should be allowed to further our holistic skills because, cliché as it may seem, education is a treasure that will never depreciate in value over time, and it is something that nobody can steal from us. It may not entirely dictate what we can become in the future, but proper education can help straighten our paths and open doors of opportunities that would take us to where we have always dreamed to be and even beyond!
I feel extremely blessed for my family, whose unrelenting support has constantly driven me to do great in my endeavors. Your words of encouragement and even just your warmth have always made me feel like I am never alone in my own journey. Life at school may at times be challenging, but I rest in the fact that your unconditional love will always get me through any hardship. From the bottom of my heart, thank you being my rock. To all the parents out here, thank you for believing in your children’s dreams, and for being the wind beneath their wings.
Let me also take this opportunity to thank every single one of my teachers. Your devotion to your profession is unmatched. Apart from your expertise, which you have so selflessly shared to us, your patience has also been remarkable. I know it was never easy to take on the responsibility of being our second parents considering how makulit we are sometimes—or, shall I say, most times—but you still tirelessly nurtured us like we are your own children. To our nanays and tatays in this institution, you will forever be our heroes. Thank you.
To my alma mater, Antonio Villasis Memorial School, who served as my academic refuge for many years, my utmost gratitude for embracing me and my fellow graduates with wide open arms. Your walls have borne witness to the ups and downs, the defeats and victories of our days here in school. Rest assured we will always uphold your ideals no matter where our individual journeys would take us.
To God, thank you for your divine guidance. Whenever I am in doubt, you are there to calm my spirits and make me believe in my own capabilities. Thank you for your light.
Lastly, to my fellow graduates, let us congratulate ourselves for coming this far. Our efforts have finally come to fruition. Today’s ceremony not only marks the end of a chapter in our lives but also signifies the beginning of an expedition that will surely be difficult but will all be worth it in the end. We will encounter big waves and experience stormy weathers along the way, but let us promise ourselves to never lose that passion, that hunger for learning no matter how many stumbling blocks will be hurled our way.
