The 2021 Eastern Australia Flooding
The 2021 Eastern Australian Floods
A widespread flooding on the eastern coast of Australia, affecting regions from the North Coast to Sydney in the south, was described by the NSW Premier as a "one in a 100 flooding" as suburbs in Sydney experienced the worst flooding in 60 years.
The severe flooding which started from March 18, 2021 and lasted up until March 29, 2021 has been caused by extreme rainfall, forcing 18,000 people to evacuate their homes, not to mention over 1,000 flood rescues, and the Australian government declaring many parts of the east coast under a natural disaster zone.
Described as "dangerous and threatening" by the Bureau of Meteorology, the flooding occured less than 18 months after Australia was affected by the Black Summer bushfires,
affecting towns still recovering from the said disaster.
Sydney and Hunter area was reported getting 400mm (16 in) to 600 mm (24 in) of rain in this time period as compared to its average which is about 1,000 mm (39 in) to 1,500 mm (59 in) of rain in a year. A recorded rainfall in the north coast was also brought by a storm that was caused by a blocking high in the Tasman Sea that caused a strong, low pressure trough towards the New South Wales coast.
The dangerous flooding caused thousands to evacuate their homes as water level rises engulfing roads, leaving towns stranded and cutting off power lines. Reported economic loss greatly hit the agricultural sector as the affected regions produces bananas, avocados and 75% of Australia's blueberries. The New South Wales Farmer's
Association even established a food appeal to the Natural Disaster Relief Fund to help farmers and farmlands to continue operating amid the flooding. Road closures and delayed deliveries caused by the natural disaster also send the prices of these products to the roof, not making it easier to the affected residents.
Hundred of livestock have been rescued and losses were also reported, specifically by drowning. Spiders, such as tarantulas and other variety of smaller insects were also reported seeking shelter in homes and garages.
infrastructure damage and property damage reaching thousands of dollars.
