(Clapping) this is really two hour presentation, I give to the high school students, cut down to 3 minutes. It all started when they unplane on my way to TED 7 years ago and in a sit next to me it was uhh, uhh, highschool student , teen ager and she came from really a poor family and she want to make something in her life and she ask me a simple question. She said” what leads to success”?
And I felt really badly because I couldn’t give her a good answer. So I get off the plane and contemplate….., I think gezz!.... , I’m in a middle of a room of successful people. So what I ask them what help them to succeed and pass it on to kids.
So here we are 7 years , 500 interviews later I’m gonna tell you what really leads to success and makes TEDsTERS tick and the first things is PASSION.
Freeman Thomas said “design driven by my PASSION”. This just to it for LOVE they don’t do it for money.
Carol Colleta said “I would pay someone to do what I do”. The interesting thing is that, they do it for LOVE and money comes anywhere.
WORK….. Rupert Murdock said they need is all “HARD WORK”. Nothing comes easily. But I have a lot of fun”. Did he say fun,??? Ruper?....... Yes. (audience laughing) (speaker smiling back at audience). That is just to have fun working and they work hard. I figured THEY’RE NO WORKAHOLICS. They’re work of Frogs. (Audience laughing)
Good! Alex Garden said that “to be successful put your nose downon something and get damn good at it.” There’s no magic. It’s PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE and it’s FOCUS.
Norman Jewison said to me “I think it all has something to do with focusing yourself to one thing”. And PUSH…..
David Gallo said “Push yourself physically, mentally, you gotta push, push, push.” You gotta push to SHYNESS AND SELF-DOUBT.
Goldie Hown “I always have self-doubts, I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t smart enough. I didn’t think I made it.
Now it’s not always easy to push yourself that why they invented Mothers. Frank Gehry, Frank Gehry said” they made my mother pushED me”. (audience laughing) SERVE.
Sherwin NULAND says it was a privilege to serve as a doctor. A lot of kids tell me they want to be a millionaire. And the first thing I say to them, ok you can’t serve yourselves you got to serve others something in value because that’s the way people really get rich.
IDEAS….. Bill Gates says I have an idea. Founding the first micro-computer software company. I say that it’s a pretty good idea and there’s no magic in creating in coming up with ideas it’s just doing just very simple things and I give lots of that later.
PERSIST…Joe Kraus said Persistence is the number one reason for our success. You gotta persist to FAILURE. You gotta persist to CRAP. Which of course means criticisms, rejection, asshole and pressure, (audience laughing and clapping at the same time) So the big end to answer these question is simple. Pay four thousand box and come to TED, (audience laughing) or failing that do the eight things and trust me, these are the big 8 things that leads to success. Thank you TEDsTERS for all your interviews (applause)
