What are meta descriptions and page titles?
Page titles and meta descriptions are important elements for a website to become relevant in Google’s algorithms. They basically become the facade of your website when someone searches for a query or a term. Page titles contain the relevant keywords or phrases that relate to the content of your website. It typically ranges from 50 to 60 characters and contains words that catch the attention of the reader. Meanwhile, the description under the page title is called a meta description. A meta description is a tag in the HTML which summarizes the content within the website. It is very important to optimize this since search engines show results that lean toward the searched-for-phrase that is in the meta description. Meta descriptions generally take about 130 to 145 characters and become the subheader of your website when it appears on search engines.
So how do I optimize these and make them attract visitors to my website?
As we’ve discussed earlier, optimizing these two is paramount to any website and SEO’s success. For starters, you need to understand and analyze a searcher’s intent. It is important to determine whether you are targeting an informational searcher, navigational searcher, or transactional searcher. The difference between these three can be found here. Once you have determined your audience, it is time to optimize! For our example, we will be using our website, greenhaveninteractive.com, to target informational searchers. To begin, we have to make sure that our website’s page title and meta description reflect the fact that we are targeting informational searchers. We might talk about things in the meta description like “We are a pioneer in digital marketing from Tacoma, WA. We innovate by employing the best designers, developers, writers, SEO experts, and social media experts from around the globe. From Tacoma to Seattle and Olympia, and to the world.” Putting in the important keywords like SEO, experts, the various locations that are within the vicinity of our office like Seattle and Olympia, will help our website climb the ranks. For the page title, keeping it interesting and attention grabbing for the searchers while also incorporating our company’s name is a must. Something like “GreenHaven Interactive: Digital Pioneers and SEO Experts from Tacoma, WA” may be a good fit.
Let us talk about length. Google doesn’t actually use a particular character limit in measuring these. Rather, they utilize a pixel-width system which can get challenging at times to get a fitting title and description for your website. Although as we have stated earlier, 50 to 60 for a page title and 130 to 145 for a meta description does the job for most cases.
With these tips, you hopefully have gotten the basics of optimizing the facade of your website in a search engine’s perspective! By putting an attention-grabbing title with a matching description that contains keywords and phrases that are often searched for, your website is now SEO-ready!
