I. Introduction
A positive sense of self is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your child. Children with high self-esteem feel loved and competent and develop into happy, productive people. Sometimes it's easy to notice when kids seem to feel good about themselves — and when they don't. We often describe this idea of feeling good about ourselves as "self-esteem."
II. Statement
As a young mother i want to learn more on how to build self confidence and self esteem in my children. It is very important for the parents to train their children to be confident. If our children believe in themselves, they will take more risks in life, accomplish their goals and achieve great things. The good thing is confidence can be developed, no matter a child’s situation or feelings. Parents can help improve a child’s self-confidence by giving their children many opportunities to practice and master their skills. Let them make mistakes and be there to boost their spirits so they keep trying, even if they sometimes fail. Parents are the main source of a child’s sense of self-worth.
The Problem
Low self esteem in children can reduce the quality of a person’s life in many different ways. Low self esteem is actually a thinking disorder in which an individual views himself as inadequate, unworthy, unlovable, and/ or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view of self permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions and ongoing selfdefeating behavior.
Effects of Low Self Esteem on Children
They tend to avoid situations where they think there’s risk of failure, embarrassment or making mistakes.
These may include:
Avoidance behaviors
Low confidence level
Lack of effort
Emotional toll
Difficulty making decision
