6 Things Malaysians Feel After Returning From Overseas
It will always seem like the grass is greener on the other side, but, chances are, if
you grew up in Malaysia, these are likely your thoughts when you return
home after a few days/months/years abroad:
1. “[INSERT FAVOURITE MALAYSIAN FOOD], I
HAVE MISSED YOU SO.”

Tell me one person who did not miss Malaysian food while they were away and I will
give that person a virtual cookie that he/she can choke on. (Not Sorry, I can be
quite defensive when it comes to Malaysian food.)
2. “I CAN FINALLY BUY ANYTHING I WANT
WITHOUT THINKING OF THE EXCHANGE RATE!”
Maths is hard enough as it is but when you have to calculate and convert everything,
it’s going to get on your nerves and possibly even be traumatizing.
3. “CAN FINALLY YUM CHA WITH FRIENDS!”
Literally, it means “drink tea” although we may consume anything but. Point being, is
there a culture or country that does yum cha better than Malaysia? Whether it’s in
a mamak or some quaint coffee shop, yum cha only makes sense here.
And just how many other places can you have a 24-hour eatery to hang out at?

4. “BEING HOME TO CELEBRATE CNY/DEEPAVALI/
THAIPUSAM/RAYA.”
There is no lonelier time when you are overseas than when CNY/Deepavali/
Thaipusam/Raya comes around and you can’t celebrate it. There’s just something
about family, relatives and friends coming together during an important festivity that
warms the heart.
Also, no harm collecting angpaus/money packets in person—this ensures that all the
cash goes into your own pockets.
5. “FINALLY, PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I
SAY!”
Or, finally, don’t have to fake my accent anymore.
Or, finally, people won’t judge me for the incessant need to end every sentence
with ‘-lah’.
Or, finally, I don’t have to speak in proper England full sentences.

6. “ACTUALLY, MALAYSIA NOT THAT BAD-LAH.”
Yes, we may not have the best customer service or the best relationship with the
local jam roadblock traffic system, but there is no place like home—when home has
awesome food, friends and family, your own bed and did I mention awesome food?
