Domestic Waste Management: Health and Environmental implications
Waste management can be seen as the retrieval, transport, processing, recycling or disposal,
and monitoring of waste materials. The term normally refers to materials produced by human
activity, and is generally carried out to reduce their effect on health, the environment or
aesthetics. Waste management is also carried out to recover resources from it. Waste
management may involve solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, with different
methods and fields of expertise for each. Waste management practices are different for
developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas, and for residential and industrial
producers. Management for non-hazardous residential and institutional waste in metropolitan
areas is usually the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for
nonhazardous commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator.
Numerous studies and researches have been Carried out on the sources and characteristics of
domestic wastes as well as the possible adverse effect of inappropriate management and best
international practices. One thing that is still not clear however is what exactly constitutes
domestic waste and how much do we know about what should be classified as waste? What
are the historical contexts of waste management? Furthermore, this study will explore some of
the existing methods of domestic waste management and their efficiency. Another objective of
this study will be to determine the most effective modes of domestic waste management and
recommend ways to improve these existing techniques.
The present study seeks to examine these important questions with a view to providing answers
from previous studies. This study will use a desktop approach to provide answers to the
research objectives. Specifically, the paper uses a descriptive approach to collect information
from peer reviewed publications such as, journal articles, environmental organizations reports
and books.
