I. Rationale
Pursuant to DepEd Memorandum No. 244, s. 2011, which declares November as National Reading Month and November 25 as Nationwide Araw ng Pagbasa, the Division of Lipa City will join the celebration by launching a series of activities focused on fostering a love for reading and enhancing literacy among pupils and students. This activity is also in line with 90th National Book Week celebration with the theme, "Magbasa, Mangarap, Magdiwang" (Read, Dream, Celebrate), which highlights the transformative power of literature to inspire dreams, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for reading.
II. Objectives
This month-long celebration aims to create meaningful, shared reading experiences that emphasize the importance of reading in today's digital age. It offers a unique opportunity to align with the National Learning Recovery Program's goals, reinforcing efforts to promote literacy, support learning recovery, and strengthen reading habits across all grade levels.
III. Proposed Activities
1. Reading Picnic
Target Audience: Kindergarten to Grade 3 students
Date and Time: November 28 or December 06, 2024
Description:
The Reading Picnic aims to bring students together in a relaxed, social environment where reading is not only encouraged but becomes a fun and enjoyable experience. Children from Kindergarten to Grade 3 will gather with their mats in an outdoor setting that is on the court, simulating a picnic atmosphere. The activity will involve reading stories aloud by the The Library Club Members, enjoying their snacks, and engaging in conversations about their favorite books.
Activity Flow:
1. Set Up: Children bring their own mats, snacks, and their favorite books. The space will be decorated to create a cozy, picnic-inspired environment.
2. Story Time: Library club members will read aloud different stories, including both classic and modern children's literature.
3. Snack Break: During snack time, children can share their thoughts about the stories they’ve heard and interact with one another.
4. Interactive Reading: Children will be encouraged to share their favorite books or stories, creating a peer-sharing experience.
5. Closing: A group photo session to commemorate the event, along with a recap of the stories shared during the activity.
Materials Needed:
- Mats or blankets for students to sit on
- Assorted snacks (can be donated by parents or school)
- Books for reading
- Portable speakers or microphones (for larger groups)
2. Buddy Reading Sessions
Target Audience: Grades 4 to 10
Date: From November 26 -December 06, 2024
Description:
The Buddy Reading Session pairs passionate readers from Junior High School with younger students (Grades 4-6) or students who may not have developed a love for reading. Through this partnership, older students act as reading mentors, sharing stories and encouraging the younger students to read aloud and reflect on the content. This activity aims to build confidence in readers and create a supportive reading community within the school.
Activity Flow:
1. Pairing: Students who have a passion for reading (Grades 7-10) will be paired with younger students or those who struggle with reading. Each pair will receive a set of stories appropriate for the younger student’s reading level.
2. Story Sharing: Older students will read aloud to their buddies, engaging them with fun and interactive storytelling. After reading, the pair will discuss the story, focusing on themes, characters, and what they liked about the book.
3. Reading Together: Students will take turns reading portions of a story, allowing for shared reading experience.
4. Reflection & Feedback: At the end of the session, students will reflect on what they learned from each other and discuss their thoughts on the stories shared.
5. Closing: Each pair will share their favorite part of the story and why they liked it, helping develop critical thinking and expressive language skills.
Materials Needed:
- Age-appropriate storybooks for Buddy Reading
- Comfortable reading space (e.g., library, classroom)
- Reading guides or prompts to guide discussion
IV. Expected Outcomes:
- Increased interest in reading among younger students.
- Strengthened reading skills and confidence in both participants.
- Enhanced relationships between Junior High School students and younger peers.
- Encouragement of reading as a social and enjoyable activity.
V. Conclusion:
These activities, the Reading Picnic and Buddy Reading Sessions, are designed to build a community of readers, enhance literacy skills, and promote the joys of reading in an interactive, social setting. We look forward to seeing students develop a love for books and form meaningful connections through shared reading experiences.
