5 Reasons (for Women) to Learn Kiteboarding from Women
I should start this post by acknowledging that I know a lot of great men who teach
women how to kiteboard. Similarly, women are fully capable of teaching men. There are
however, some key advantages for women to learn from women. This article is written
for those whom are on the fence about taking up the sport or are maybe feeling
intimidated.
1) Communication
Birds and Bees; Mars and Venus. Let’s face it, men and women communicate
differently. Women tend to rely primarily on intuition for most things. This is not
something that can easily be communicated with words but other women are able to
pick up on these subtleties and guide you through them. A lot of communication is
feeling and hard to put to words so who better to do this for you than someone who
speaks the language.
2) Fun Factor
It’s really, really, really fun learning to kiteboard from women. The giggles, the
understanding, the sisterhood comes into play with a female instructor. Often when you
take a kiteboard lesson, you gain a friend. Kite communities are often quite small. It’s
fun having a familiar face when you’re out on the town.
3) Inspiration
There’s truly nothing more inspiring than someone living a full, authentic life. Kiteboard
instructors often travel the world, chasing the wind and work as they go. They are
usually strong, and fit, and extremely happy. There’s a confidence to this. There’s a
sense of freedom. The saying ‘My life is your vacation.’ is true for many instructors.
Seeing your peer live a beautiful, vibrant life inspires you to do the same. Seeing a
woman fly through the air without fear and hold her own on and off the water, reminds
you that it’s possible for you as well.
4) Mechanics
You may have noticed, men and women’s bodies are incredibly different. We tend to
use our bodies differently as well. Men typically have more physical strength and
bruteness. Women are usually smaller and rely more on technique and precision.
Strength and grace. Aggressive and less so. The approaches are often quite different
and learning from someone familiar with the mechanics of female physiology is
extremely beneficial. A female instructor isn’t going to focus on the power of getting you
up there (unless that’s the kind of rider you are) but more so how to get the flow just
right to get things moving.
5) Sex
There are no distracting flirty vibes when you’re a woman learning from a woman. This
doesn’t always happen with male instructors of course but many women find they can
more easily be themselves when they learn from another woman.
Our team is owned by a woman and primarily staffed by women. We always have one
male instructor, who’s the best, because we need who he is.
We are women empowering through sport.
