Dealing with Juvenile Delinquents
Cases of juvenile delinquents in the United States are multiplying. Yearly, almost two million juveniles are getting arrested. Some causes for increased juvenile delinquency include inadequate attention from parents and the surrounding environments where one grows. other causes may include neglect, emotional and physical forms of abuse. "No Matter How Loud I Shout" by Edward Humes presents several instances relevant in dealing with juvenile delinquents. The work is comprised of Hume's participation and observations within the juvenile justice unit in Los Angeles. The book has four major parts, and it begins with a plot nonfiction preface. The preface presents a dismal scene regarding the juvenile hall and the rotten system of juvenile justice. The preface is focused on some sensory details that provoke the readers to disgust the circumstances where justice should exist while making the reader emphasize with the incarcerated juveniles after going through some of their secrets. The book pinpoints several aspects through generating the best ways for an individual to deal with juvenile delinquency.
First, the juvenile system should be rectified. In the first section of her book, Humes presents the futility of the justice system through all its aspects and its ramifications that negatively impact most children's lives. The section generates a background of most juvenile delinquents while characterizing some adults like Judge Dorn, who presents the kind of relationship these children are subjected to by the juvenile system (Humes 10). The juvenile justice system is failing through its rehabilitation efforts. On most occasions, it does not punish severe criminal behaviours by the youth, mainly due to corruption where race and money are involved. Juveniles deserve to be punished for their first mistakes through preventing reoccurrence in the future. Also, the extent of development, emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities is more prevalent in juvenile offenders than the other teenagers. Most children come out of their arrest worse than they were initially. This clearly illustrates that the juvenile system is failing through its rehabilitation efforts. It should be rectified by ensuring justice and hiring the right personnel to adhere to the juvenile offenders' needs.
A parent has the responsibility of being their child's support system. Parent should always support their children within all crucial moments. Parents need to consider the life they had at home with their children while considering any fights that may have contributed to the kid's erratic behavior. Also, a parent is responsible for ensuring that home is the place where these kids feel happier and safe. This is also evident in the second section of the Humes book. He proposes disparate remedies various groups have towards remedying the colossal issue associated with the juvenile system of justice (Humes 15). It emphasizes how adults should be involved in these children's lives while generating hope regarding the possibility of change. Parents play a crucial role in establishing a child's attitudes and behaviors which may be difficult to suppress and change. The relationship between a parent and a child is challenging and one which every kid believes in as being the most relevant bond in their lives. Parents should believe in their children and always be hopeful that change is possible.
The family has a massive responsibility of dealing with juvenile delinquency by improving the child's development. Parents have a primary responsibility of providing their children with proper nurturing throughout their development. The training children receive from parents hugely determines the kind of lifestyle these children will have in the future. Parents instilling antisocial behaviors and attitudes in their kids encourage them to persist through adulthood. Child development encompasses physical, emotional, social, and intellectual factors, while the family is the significant foundation for all these developments. The family structure thereby has a role towards shaping children's development through generating them with security and rising their skills and values. Most children depend on their parents to provide basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter. Family presents children with emotional and physical security, thereby influencing their confidence and ability to express themselves fully. The family also should teach values and norms to their children, which includes the distinction between what is wrong and right, responsibility, fairness, and compassion. Children acquire such values through emulating or observing their parent's behaviors. Parents have a responsibility to help their children develop language, cognitive, interactional, and emotional skills. By dealing with juvenile delinquency, parents play a huge role in shaping their children's behaviors.
Children should be involved in various activities while parents get involved after an arrest. On most occasions, most juveniles make mistakes as a result of boredom or having a relationship with the wrong group. Surrounding a child with supportive and positive individuals changes their outlook and prospects. There are programs in America, such as the Salvation Army and the Girls and Boys Club, which target all troubled teens. Fun classes such as music and art and church and sports groups can be created towards ensuring that children have a minimum time of getting involved with juvenile delinquency. Also, when a child is taken to custody, the parent is responsible for hiring a reputable attorney. There are consequences and penalties incurred after an arrest. Youth have minimum chances than adults of fulfilling their paperwork and any other requirements mandated by the system of justice. Therefore, it is essential to remain in constant communication and contact with probation officers, correction officers, and any other public officials involved within the case.
Restricted access to guns and firearms should be placed on teenagers. Many teenagers in the 21st century have easy access to guns and firearms, increasing gangs and gang shootings within the community. According to Humes (30), gangs are to be blamed for the predominance of all gun-related murders, robberies, and assaults. Currently, very minimum attention is paid to mass murders and occurrences of school shootings involving guns. Humes questions the increased accessibility of guns to teenagers within most urban locations, which contributes to the dramatic increase in shootings within schools. Currently, there is a minimum public outcry within most urban proliferation. Anti-gun movements should be created by banning teenagers from accessing guns. Firearm access should also be prohibited for teenagers. Guns should be kept out of reach for all individuals who may utilize them for their selfish purposes of instilling harm to other individuals.
Conclusively, parents have a massive responsibility towards shaping their children's future behaviors. They constantly monitor any unusual character within their children and get involved by ensuring that they are not engaging in any delinquent behavior. Moreover, the state has trusted the juvenile system of justice by correcting juvenile delinquents' behavior, and it is heartbreaking when children come out of these systems more disabled. On the other hand, children are responsible for controlling themselves by engaging in constructive activities and avoiding wrong crowds, which may influence their characters.
