Research Report Assessing Community Awareness and Preparedness for Flood Risks in Informal
Settlements: A Case Study of Githogoro, Nairobi County Prepared by: Hellen Gichuru
Position: Administrative & Research Intern
Department: County Government of Nairobi — Department of Disaster Management and
Coordination
Date: August 2025
1. Introduction Flooding remains one of the most recurrent disasters affecting informal settlements
in Nairobi County. Areas such as Githogoro are highly vulnerable due to poor drainage systems,
unplanned housing, and limited access to early warning information. This report presents findings
from a short study aimed at assessing the level of community awareness and preparedness for
flood risks in Githogoro. The goal was to identify existing challenges and propose strategies to
strengthen community resilience.
2. Objectives The study aimed to:
- Evaluate residents’ knowledge of flood risk causes and preventive measures.
- Identify available community resources for flood preparedness.
- Recommend practical ways to improve awareness and response mechanisms.
3. Methodology A descriptive research design was used. Data was collected through:
- Interviews: Conducted with 20 local residents and 3 community leaders.
- Observation: On-site assessment of drainage, waste disposal, and flood-prone zones.
- Document Review: Analysis of previous departmental flood response reports.
The data was analyzed qualitatively to identify key themes regarding awareness, preparedness,
and community challenges.
4. Findings The study revealed that while most residents are aware that flooding is seasonal, over
60% lack knowledge on specific preparedness measures such as early warning signs,
emergency contacts, or evacuation routes. Inadequate waste management and construction along
waterways further increase vulnerability.
Community leaders reported that limited resources and public awareness efforts have reduced
the impact of previous sensitization campaigns. However, residents expressed willingness to
participate in future training and disaster response programs if supported by the county
government.
5. Recommendations 1. Enhance Public Awareness Campaigns: Conduct continuous
sensitization on flood preparedness through barazas, social media, and local radio.
2. Strengthen Drainage Maintenance: Partner with residents and community groups to clear
blocked drainage and improve waste management.
3. Develop Local Response Teams: Train volunteers to coordinate early warning, evacuation, and
first aid during flood events.
4. Promote Collaboration: Encourage partnerships between county departments, NGOs, and
local leaders to mobilize resources for disaster risk reduction.
6. Conclusion The study highlights that while awareness of flooding exists, practical preparedness
remains low in Githogoro. Improving communication, training, and infrastructure maintenance will
significantly reduce disaster risks and strengthen community resilience. Continued collaboration
between the county government and local residents is vital for sustainable flood management.
7. Acknowledgement Special thanks to the County Government of Nairobi, Department of
Disaster Management and Coordination, and the Githogoro community for their cooperation
and valuable insights during the study.
