Postgraduate Dissertation: Investigation of Inverted Brayton Cycle of Water for Methane Oxidation Catalytic Conversion
Studied about the possibility of removing water using inverted Brayton cycle from exhaust gases of dual fuel engines for methane catalytic conversion process and also, studied about the possibility of recovering and utilising cold energy from LNG.
During my postgraduate dissertation, I studied the possibilities of reducing methane emissions by removing water from the exhaust of dual fuel engines for which I had to work on finding new ideas to facilitate methane emission reductions by identifying a suitable catalyst for methane catalytic conversion. The percentage of water that can be removed from the exhaust gases was around 97%, which shows that this technique is an efficient one. Water should be removed because it can decompose and increase the surface temperature of catalysts. Water results in catalyst decomposition and hence, methane present cannot be treated. This, in turn, nullifies the advantages reduced emissions obtained from the usage of LNG as a fuel. The catalyst that can be used for methane catalytic conversion is Palladium oxide as it can be used even when the exhaust temperatures are low.
Undergraduate Dissertation: Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Natural (Areca Nut and Palm) and Synthetic Fibre Reinforced Composite Materials
Studied about the different fabrication methods used for producing composite materials and evaluated the mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, etc of those composites.
Studied about the different fabrication methods used for producing composite materials and evaluated the mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, etc of those composites. The main objectives of the project are to evaluate the suitability of producing metal fibre composite using palm and areca fibres and also, compare the properties of those fibres with that of glass fibres. The study deals with the preparation of natural fibre composites and glass reinforced fibre composites by using hand layup method in which good interfacial adhesion is generated by a combination of fibre modification and matrix methods. Initially, the fibres were treated with NaOH in order to improve resin fibre interfacial bonding. Generally, the composites that contain treated fibre have a higher tensile modulus and greater flexural modulus than do untreated fibre composites.
Composites with volumetric amounts of natural fibres (palm and arecanut ratio 2:1) were fabricated and they were arranged in randomly oriented discontinued form. Tensile, hardness microstructure characterization, impact and flexure tests were carried out to determine the strength of the material and mechanical behaviour of the composites.
