7 Common Mistakes Made New Affiliate Marketers
When I first started affiliate marketing all I wanted was to make money. I was jack of traits trying everything left right and center not knowing the mistakes that could affect my chances of succeeding this business.
Through my years of experience and coaching other people about affiliate marketing I came to a conclusion that the following are the seven common mistakes that new affiliate marketers make.
Let’s discuss each of the seven mistakes below.
1. Joining Too Many Affiliate Links
When I first joined affiliate marketing, I could join every affiliate program I came across. Note, this is a very big mistake.
As William Mathews says,” the first law of success is concentration, to bend all all energies to one point, and to go directly to that point, looking neither to the right or the left.”
This simply means that you only concentrate on a single task in order to perform better in it.
Yes, I absolutely agree that one should have multiple streams of income when working online, but it is also important to note that too many programs will be much be much to deal with and in the end becomes unmanageable.
Before joining any affiliate, program choose wisely and don’t overload yourself.
2. Selling Rather Than Helping
Affiliate marketing has the word “marketing” in it, but for most part our job as an affiliate is not always to sell, that is the job of the sales page our affiliate links leads the reader to.
When I first started affiliate marketing I was very naïve and could fill my sales pages with words and links that screamed “BUY THIS NOW.” I realized that I didn’t help the reader or the potential buyer learn why they have this particular product. I only wanted them to click a link which would hopefully lead to a commission for me.
Before somebody buys a product they always want to hear from other people before making a decision to buy the given product, for this reason reviews are so powerful. The reviews are genuine feedback from people who usually have absolutely nothing to gain if someone buys that product or not.
As an affiliate marketer when you talk more like an unbiased reviewer rather than a high-pressure salesperson, we will find we make more sales and people will come back for advice on other products in the future.
3. Distractions
Distractions is not only a biggest downfall for new affiliate marketers but it also causes big issues for seasoned affiliate marketers.
Distractions does not only affect affiliate marketers but it also affects those who are in other online fields for instance network marketing among others. You are were working on this project then something shinny pops up in your inbox or it is mentioned in one of the forums you share. Then there you go chasing the new idea about how to make money online.
Ignore these butterflies because be sure they will always be flying on a constant basis. They will distract you from your project/campaign at hand. One completed and profitable campaign is worth so much more than 50 almost half-finished campaigns or projects.
Affiliate marketing just like any type of business it also requires self-motivation and focus. For many of us, these are learned skills. Once you are always aware of the mistakes that can cause a lack of profits and productivity, you will be better able to grow your business and be profitable in the long term.
4. Make Money on Online Products
I believe you have come across this before. You’re in an online Facebook group/forum then a person writes a post complaining that they can’t make money online. But in their signature line they have something along the lines of “I made 50 Million Dollars with this” followed by the affiliate link.
This happens almost all the time. Please don’t be this kind of person.
If you are a new affiliate marketer and you would like to promote your product and make money on the online platform, don’t make false claims that it made you money. To be safe don’t make false claims at all.
It is only advisable to talk about the benefits of the products or training, for instance why it sounds awesome to you but don’t try to trick people. You will ruin your credibility.
5. Not Testing
When I am online promoting my product for instance Clickbank offer, I put myself in the shoes of a potential customer and opt in to test the vendors follow up sequence.
In my early stages in the business I learned this the hard way.
Nothing breaks a reader’s trust more than being led to a promotion that will blow up their inbox. As an affiliate put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer and see what will happen if they follow your advice.
6. Not Comparing
One of the best methods I use to sell my affiliate products online especially those from amazon is by comparing the main product with two other similar products
When people are in buying mode for a physical product, they tend to have their options narrowed down to 2 or3 and need help in making the choice that is best for them.
By comparing three products for example 3 Best Widgets. I not only help my readers to make a choice but I also have may affiliates links there for the three products instead of only one.
Over time, when I track that web page. I will be able to see which products is most interesting to readers and move the best converting product to the top of the page for better CTR
Comparison web pages are useful and popular to both the affiliate marketer and the reader and in addition they are also very profitable.
7. Not Tracking
This was a BIG mistake I made when I first started out. I began my affiliate marketing career using free-to-make web pages on a site called WordPress (and I still do this to this day).
I am fond of promoting Amazon products on these pages, but would forget to use unique tracking affiliate links on each page.
Why is this a mistake? Very simple — when you make a sale, you want to know WHERE the sale came from. This enables you to know which pages are converting well so you can grow and scale that campaign.
Creating a unique tracking ID for an Amazon link is easy. Simply log in to your Amazon affiliate dashboard, click “Account Settings” at the very top on the right, then click “Manage Tracking IDs”. From there you can make a new tracking ID so you can track which web page/campaign sold what.
Yes, making any commission is cool, but knowing where and how you made that commission is what makes you a better marketer. It lets you grow and scale your campaigns as opposed to working blindly.
