History
Trajan was the greatest of all the Roman emperors. He was declared by the senate as “optimus princeps” meaning “the best ruler”. Trajan is the most exceptional of the roman emperors. During his era, he undertook military operations as a result the Roman Empire extended to maximum territorial size. The Nabataean kingdom, Dacia, Armenia and Mesopotomia came under the Roman Empire during his rule. He is famous for his vast building projects and welfare programs. During his magnificent era many roads and harbors were built. The remarkable structures include Trajan’s column, Trajan’s forum, the road and canal around the Iron gates, Trajan’s and Alcantara bridges.
He set up an imperial fund to serve the poor and the children. His work for the well being of masses brought him positive reputation. All the emperors after him are judged by the standards setup by him.
He is commonly known as soldier-emperor as he was not just an emperor but a great soldier as well. He was not an ordinary warrior type of emperor but also widely famous for his insight, judgment and prudence.He was appreciated by the ordinary people, senate and military.
It is because of his contributions in the fields of culture and architecture, that the existence of roman society is still reflected in the western civilization. The impact of the Roman Empire is evident not only in culture but in literature and religion, too. The effects roman heritage has on the western civilization can never be overlooked, even after centuries of its disappearance. Whether it is due to the influence of the Latin language or the rich culture of the roman emperors like Trajan. Its morals and principles are still accepted and followed among the western world. In addition to culture and tradition, the greatest impact is exerted by the architecture of Rome, especially the building and the construction work done during the time of Trajan. In every country of west you will find a road setup that historically originates from the roman period. No doubt their roads were not as urban as the roads of today. But, still they were the pioneers to build roads of concrete for the purpose of travelling.
