Celebrating Female Nigerian Authors
March 8, 2018 etinosa
Happy International Women’s day. I’m glad there is a day where the whole world celebrates women, women should be
celebrated everyday of course because we are AMAZING. So this post was supposed to be published next month but I decided to
move it up to today because of what this day represents. I want to celebrate Female Nigerian Authors today and here is a list of
some of the great Nigerian female authors who are taking Nigerian literature to the world and rocking the literary scene.
TOMI ADEYEMI: Well if you haven’t heard of her then you have been living under a rock my friend. She is the author ofChildren of
Blood and Bone which was published on the 6th of march and is already making waves all over the world. She also has a blog
where she teaches creative writing and shares her writing journey. Her story about how she decided to write her book is
inspiring. I read a few chapters of her book and I was blown away, it is set in a fictional version of Nigeria and draws inspiration
from Yoruba folklore and I just had to look for a way to get a copy of her book. A movie based on the books is already in the
works and I cant wait to see more black girl magic on the big screen.
“
Adeyemi has said she wanted to write a fantasy novel set in West Africa so that “ a
little Black girl [could] pick up my book one day and see herself as the star…I want her
to know that she’s beautiful and she matters and she can have a crazy, magical
adventure even if an ignorant part of the world tells her she can never be Hermione
Granger.
– Wikipedia
NNEDI OKORAFOR: If you have been following my blog you will know that I am a big fan of Nnedi Okorafor. I read her book Binti
last year and it totally changed the way I view science fiction. Her stories are an amazing fusion of fantasy, science fiction and
African culture. She is an award-winning author with a PhD in English from University of Illinois, Chicago and is an associate
professor of creative writing and literature Art at University of Buffalo. She has written several books including the Binti trilogy,
Who fears death which is being made into a TV series by HBO , Lagoon, Akata witch and recently the Black Panther : Long live the
king comic series.
AYOBAMI ADEBAYO: She is the author of Stay with me, a novel about a childless woman and the lengths she goes to have a child
as well as the consequences of her actions. Her novel has been shortlisted for several awards and was named a Notable book for
the year by The New York Times and best book of the year by the Guardian and many others. I haven’t read this book completely
yet cause I’m scared of the feelings it might evoke in me, cause I know fully well how society treats childless women but I will get
to it soon so watch out for my emotional review of it. Stay with me is Ayobami Adebayo’s debut novel and I cant wait to see what
other books she writes in future.
BUCHI EMECHETA: She is the author of Joys of Motherhood, Second class citizen, In the ditch and other great books. Most of her
stories draw from her life experiences, she was married at 16 yrs, stuck in an unhappy marriage and after she left her husband
she took care of her five kids alone while writing her stories. Joys of motherhood was the first novel I read written by her and
though I was a little too young to understand some themes in it, it is about the struggles women face in Nigerian society,
motherhood, tradition and everything in between although it ends on a sad note but the lessons I got from that book have stayed
with me through the years. I would love to re-read it now that I am older. Buchi Emecheta passed away on the 25th of January
2017 at the age of 72 , but her works live on and may she rest in peace. You can also read this article written by her son about her
life.
CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE: This list wouldn’t be complete without the queen herself. She is one of the most prominent African
authors and has written several books which include; Purple Hibiscus, The thing around your neck, half of a yellow sun,
Americanah which have received several awards. She is also a feminist and recently wrote a book called Dear Ijeawele or a
feminist manifesto in fifteen suggestions as well as her speech, we should all be feminists. She has been invited for TED talks
and several other events and she is really showing the world that Nigeria has a lot to offer. Here is one of her TED talks titled the
danger of a single story which I recommend you all to watch if you have the time. It’s really eye-opening.
These are just some of the great female authors we have in Nigeria. There are a lot more nigerian female authors that I can list
that this blog page might not be able to contain them. I am celebrating them all. They are all inspirations to Nigerian girls like me
who love writing.
Who are your favourite female authors from your country? I would love to know and once again Happy International Women’s
Day. Cheers to all women from all races and all parts of the world. Have a great day.

This was an amazing post! I sadly don’t really have any favourite (female) Dutch authors, I hardly ever read anything in
dutch anymore so I have no idea what’s out there. But I am proud of Marieke Nijkamp who wrote a really successful YA
book in English

Yes dear. Must be rectified
. I’m also crazy about fantasy and sci fi, I’m always on the look out for
books in those two genres. They stimulate my imagination and I’m also a nerd so

I’m surprised. I’ve actually heard of all these books, but I’m only familiar with some of their names, Adichie, Adeyemi,
Okorafor…
I added the Joys of Motherhood to my TBR. I hope to read more books by Nigerian authors. I also hope to be one myself
^^
Personally, I don’t have any favourite Irish authors but I like Deirdre Sullivan’s Prim series. I also plan to read the Artemis
Fowl series by Eoin Colfer.

Several authors added to my TBR-list, thank you! From Sweden the author I’d like to celebrate is Astrid Lindgren, probably
our most beloved author. She wrote children’s books but children’s books I still enjoy as an adult, a few of them in a
fantasy setting.

Lately I have been seeing more and more female authors from Nigeria and it’s really inspiring and amazing how they are
rising up in the literary world. I can only hope that other African countries start catching up, because Nigeria has been the
star lately
it’s very, very interesting to read Nigerian books for me, because it’s so far away from my country, yet so
much to relate to, somehow.

Yeah. Nigerian authors have been getting popular internationally recently. Other countries also have good authors
for example Ghana but I think what stands in their way is marketing. So many great books in Africa, but they aren’t
know internationally. But I’m glad more people are getting interested in African literature. I’m glad you enjoy
Nigerian literature.
