HOW TO USE A DOG TRAINING COLLAR
Homebreaking your dog has never been easier as there now a variety of ways of ensuring that your dog is guided towards becoming what dogs are exalted to be, man’s best friend. One of the most common ways is the electronic collar.
The electronic collar is a collar, obviously, used to guide the dog’s behavior towards what you want to groom them to behave like. The device is programmed to apply electric current to the necks of the dogs on receiving a signal from a transmitting device and so they are usually wireless devices. One important thing to know is that most people conjecture that the entire use of the dog training collar to simply correct the dog’s behavior from doing undesirable things like digging through the trash. While neglecting that the most important use of a dog training collar is not to correct the dog’s behavior, instead it is to improve the relationship you have with your dog. Both functions show how to use a dog training collar.
Note that the electronic collar is not designed for putting your pet in pain, but to provide mild stimulus of discomfort that the dog will learn to identify as positive punishment for any misdeeds it may involve itself in whether they can see or sense you or not. Thus, you are advised to always set the transmitter to only signal the mildest release of electric current, just enough to grab the attention of your pet.
And in case you are interested in knowing how the electronic dog training collar works, below are a few guidelines that show how to use a dog training collar:
Preparing the Collar
Read the manual. There are thousands of variations of the dog training collar. So, in order to firstly, ensure that the collar’s specifications are a match with what you desire and that secondly, you don’t assume the same mode of operation for other dog collar you might have observed usage of.
Put in the batteries. Into both the collar and the transmitters. It so happens that some variations are otherwise powered using other means of power other than batteries, but for the sheer ease of obtaining worn out parts like the batteries the battery powered collars are more commonly used. After adding the power source, test out the devices BEFORE you put the collar on your dog, to test for faulty equipment. Afterwards, reduce the intensity of the output to its lowest value. That sums up the first few steps on how to use a dog training collar, ensuring its usability.
Then switch it off and attach it to the neck of your dog. While doing this, watch out for any neck wounds your dog might have and place the collar away from the wound to make sure the wound’s sensitivity does not cause exponential pain. Also, some collars have little prongs that will have to make contact with the skin of the dog for greater efficiency, attach the collar ever so gently and more so tightly in this case to ensure that the dog doesn’t feel any sort of discomfort or you do not end up restricting the dog’s breathing, while the collar never falls off.
Next, leave the collar on the dog for the duration of at least a week before using it for the first time on the dog. The purpose of this restraint is to have the dog associate the collar with freedom and distance the reasoning of the dog from the collar being a source of possible displeasure. The goal you should therefore have using the dog collar is to make the dog think that it gets uncomfortable doing the undesirable things, if you use the shock feature on the dog training collar immediately after attaching it to the dog will probably alert the dog to the part the neck collar plays in the process and render the entire process useless, possibly, in some rare cases, for the lifetime of the dog.
Using the Dog Training Collar
After waiting out the necessary waiting period to get the dog accustomed to the neck collar, activate the transmitter and observe your dog’s reaction to the lowest intensity of activation. The response could be a twitch of its ears or shaking its head as if its trying to get away from the collar.
Silently wait for a response of your dog to the shock from the collar, if there is none, increase the level on the transmitter to the next and wait again, do this until you get the lowest value of shock intensity your dog responds to. You then use it to by activating the shock function anytime you observe any undesirable act done by the dog to deter the dog from repeating it again.
However, in order to get the best out of the collar, you should resist the urge to only use the dog training collar just to correct the misbehaviors of the dog, but instead seize the opportunity to ensure the dog learns how to understand and obey your commands. This is done by familiarizing it with a command and reinforcing the command using the shock function of the dog training collar. Some examples of creative ways you can familiarize your dog with commands are given below;
“Sit”
To do this, all you do is press the button while telling the dog to sit. Holding a treat in your hand over the dog’s nose. The dog raises its nose while dropping its tail. When the dog seats, you immediately seize pressing the button. Repeat this process for a few times with a treat, and then repeat a few more times without the treat to ensure that the dog solely responds to the instruction.
Using your own creative techniques but with the guideline provided in the example above you can try out way more commands like the voiceless “come,” or the “bed” command.
Remember to be patient during the training sessions, praise the dog when he correctly responds to your instructions with a pat on the back, a rub or treats. when ‘correcting’ bad decisions by the dog press the button for a maximum time of 3-4 seconds in the lowest intensity, not repeatedly pressing the button as the goal is how to use a dog collar effectively not to hurt your dog.
