Marketing efforts in the late 19th century reached to the point that tobacco companies began inserting illustrated cards into their product packaging. A marketing strategy primarily used to stiffen the cigarette packs, however, instantly gained popularity as collectible items with subjects like sports, actors, flags, animals, and more.
