Inspired by a passion for Cambodia and a commitment to sustainable development, the Song
Saa Foundation initiates and promotes projects that improve the wellbeing of communities and
natural environments of the Koh Rong Archipelago and beyond.
Protecting the land
Protecting the people
Y
ou’ve probably heard about deforestation, the effect
of pesticides and fertilizers and that getting rid of all
the waste people produce are big problems in every
country. In Cambodia, a developing country, those challenges
often can’t be solved because resources are very limited.
If plastic and other artificial materials aren’t properly disposed
they pose a health issue to communities and a threat to the
oceans. If forests, especially rainforests are cut down to
grow palm trees for palm oil, to sell the wood or to create
agricultural land, humans risk to loose half of the oxygen
producing species on Earth. And the use of chemicals for
growing food, poisons drinking water and harms marine life.
The Song Saa Sustanability center was founded to help
the villager in the Koh rong Archipelago with alternatives
for making a living. Programs include education, a
waste management system, or mangrove and rainforest
conservation.
Did you know?
More than half of the world’s species live in the rainforest.
What you can do:
Learn as much as you can about how your consumption
affects the environment and communities around the world
and how everything you do has an effect on other humans
and the planet.
C
ambodia is one of the poorest countries in the
world. Finding work that allows people to make a
decent living, getting a good education and being
able to see a doctor are big challenges for the people
of Cambodia.
For example most people in the Koh Rong Archipelago
make their living from fishing. Yet, less fish means less
income for fishermen and their families.
To help the people of the Archipelago the Song Saa
Foundation tries to find other sources of income for
the community such silk production, creates education
programs about how to grow food, how to stay healthy
and how to not ruin the land they live on and brings
doctors to the Koh Rong communities.
Did you know?
Only one in seven people has the opportunity to see a
doctor when they are sick.

to get involved.
Protecting the sea
I
n the Koh Rong Archipelago, as in many coastal regions all over
the world, local communities need the ocean to make a living.
Fisherman depend on an abundance of marine life as do people
that work in tourism. However overfishing – that means humans
catch so many fish in such a short time with large industrial fishing
vessels, that nature can’t keep up - has a dire effect on the world’s
oceans. Ninety percent of all large predatory fish like tuna and shark
have already been killed. However in 2006 the Song Saa Foundation
helped to turn the Archipelago into a marine reserve – an ocean area
that is protected from fishing or other ways that exploit the sea. The
success of this first marine reserve has been remarkable, with fish
stocks and corals steadily recovering. Not only in the reserve but
outside of it where fishermen are allowed to catch them.
Did you know?
You can tell how healthy an ocean ecosystem
is by the amount of predator fish like sharks
there are.
What you can do:
You can help guard the ocean by recycling,
and by not littering. And you can be very
mindful about eating only those fish that
have been caught in a sustainable way
that doesn’t damage the oceans.
