Burmese Python
The largest subspecies of Indian python, and one of the
6 largest snakes in the world, the Burmese python has an
average length of 12 feet (3.7 meters), but has been found
at lengths of up to 19 feet (5.8 meters) and of course there
have been many exaggerated claims.
Are there any tigers in
Cambodia?
What animals live in Cambodia?
D
eep in the forests of Cambodia there still roam wild
cattle, deer, and predators like tigers and leopards.
On the Cambodian side of the Mekong River, there
are also a few Irrawaddy Dolphins. Other animals of
Cambodia include monkeys, buffalo, panthers, civets,
and crocodiles. Unfortunately, species like the Asian
elephant and the Indochinese tiger, are endangered
because of illegal hunting.
During and after the Khmer Rouge years, scientists
weren’t allowed to work in Cambodia’s forest. They have
only recently begun to study these areas and discover
what animals still live there. They were delighted to find
the almost extinct Siamese crocodiles, as well as Giant
“royal” turtles which they thought were extinct for more
than a century.
Did you know?
The giant turtles that weigh up to 70 pounds were called
Royal Turtles because they belonged only to the royal
families of Cambodia who used to feast on their eggs.
T
igers are beautiful animals, but the last one
spotted in Cambodia was by a trail camera in
2007. There used to be lots of tigers, but years
of illegal hunting has endangered them. Landmines
and poachers kill almost two or three tigers a month.
Poachers even use explosives to kill tigers, by tying
explosives to bait like pigs. To make things worse, more
than half of the remaining forests, where tigers live, have
been sold to timber companies, so the forests become
less. It is believed that nowadays, only 20 to 50 tigers
still exist in Cambodia’s forests. The country now plans
to bring tigers from other countries into Cambodia and
double their numbers by the year 2022.
Did you know?
Sadly, tiger skins are sold for around $600, and their
bones are sold for about $100 a pound.
Cambodia’s national animal
is the mystic Kouprey, an ox with spectacular
crescent-shaped horns. It was last seen in 1988.
However some scientist say it actually never existed.

The Dhole, the Asiatic wild dog that lives in
Cambodia can jump up to 7 feet high.
