Stacks of Belgian Waffles
Stacks of Belgian waffles - The ultimate comfort food?
Belgian waffles are a special treat for those who have a sweet tooth or even as a pick-meup when you are feeling down. With their larger squares that can hold more delicious sauces
and as many yummy toppings as you can imagine, they are the epitome of scrumptiousness.
But who says you can only eat them for breakfast or dessert? These waffles are so divine
you may just decide to eat them for all three meals.
Where did these appetizing waffles come from?
Well, Belgium of course! Joking aside, there is a bit more to the story of how this appetising
confectionery was introduced to the world. A Belgian named Walter Cleyman first-served
Belgian waffles at an expo in Seattle in 1962. However, the original delicious recipe had
been perfected back in 1958 in Brussels, Belgium. Originally, they were served with cream
and strawberries and were a huge hit amongst the hungry hordes visiting the expo. They still
have a huge pull-factor to different foodies the world over.
A few years later, another gentleman selling Belgian waffles decided to change the name of
his wares from ‘Brussels Waffles’ to the ‘Bel-Gem Waffle’ as he had noticed that many
Americans did not know that Brussels was the capital city of Belgium. The waffles back then
were made with yeast but today, baking powder is more commonly used.
Easy to make, easy to eat
Belgian waffles can be bought ready-made from supermarkets or enjoyed in many
Singaporean restaurants. If you wanted to whip up some yummy waffles at home, it would
be just as easy. Flour, sugar and baking powder in one bowl, add beaten egg yolks, milk and
vanilla essence then mix and pour into your waffle maker. Then let them cook and ready to
act as a base for your desired topping.
The best part is deciding which delectable toppings to add on your Belgian waffles. Cream,
fruits, chocolate sprinkles, ice cream, caramel, the options are endless. If you are making
your own, keep them hot in the oven so your syrups and chocolate sauces can melt with
ease. You could also wrap the waffle over with your selected delish toppings inside and
make a unique sandwich. Alternatively, pack a few for lunch by wrapping them in
greaseproof paper so they are ready to be heated and eaten.
