You Get What you Pay For
By E. Danyell Wallet
Haven't you ever heard someone say that after your 99 cent Store flashlight stopped
working with one use? Tell me something: Did you agree or did you get angry? I mean, were
you really expecting to have a quality tool that would last you for years to come? Were you
planning to pass it down to your children and your grandchildren as a family heirloom? Were
you going to ensure it for 100 dollars? How about 50 dollars? The answer is NO. You knew it
was going to break, Magoo, you just didn't expect it to be before you got a full use out of it.
This is where we stand, dear reader. Is it an impasse, or is it a quiet resignation to the
low quality, always attainable, no surprise--but "surprise, it broke"-- life style? I mean let's get
real. Don't we all love a deal? I would stand outside for an hour for a free box of pizza (and
have). It's in our nature to want to get the most without putting in the most effort. For example,
my coffee machine has an option for one cup of coffee, or two cups of coffee. I opted for one
coffee pad to "stretch" the supply and "make it last" a bit longer. I could have made two cups of
coffee. It's what I wanted. BUT, I didn't. I did NOT put two pads in my machine as it worked
its magic. Nor did I see an overabundance of sentelating, caffeinating, intoxicating--wooh, I'm
salivating!--brown ambrosia dance down like a well orchestrated ballet into my big coffee mug
of hopes and dreams.
HA! My expectations were high, but I accepted less. Wait a minute, the coffee was still
good, even great. It warmed me up with the few sips that I received from the machine, but I
wanted more. It wasn't about greed, it was about knowing exactly how much coffee it takes to
get me from lioness to kitten. Roarrrrr!! Again, because I was willing to "spend" less or devote
less to the overall outcome, I lost in the end.
Where are you going with this, you Mad Hatter, you? Well here it is:
Living your life without quality, will leave you broke, busted and disgusted.
Why do I say that? Didn't I save a coffee pad for another day, therefore, saving myself money in
the long run? Nope, because I wound up making a pot of tea after that. Are the ends still not
coming together for you? Well, let me bring it home.
The more time and energy that we spend avoiding the inevitable like life, the more life we waste
doing the inevitably worthless.

Putting an extra coffee pad in the pot and having my cup full would have not only
satiated my desire for that precious liquid gold, but it would have also mentally subdued the urge
to make the tea. If I wanted the tea, I would have had it instead of the coffee, but instead I made
both. What's the big deal? Why are you going on and on like a nag about this? Okay. Two pads
for the coffee machine would have meant not turning on another appliance to heat up water
(increased electricity), my not creating another dish to drink out of (waste of dish soap), and
most of all, not being interrupted in thought to do so. Do you know what kind of GOLD you
could be getting had I had a FULL cup of coffee?
Many of us put our life on auto-pilot and don't plan, don't live, don't drink a full cup of
coffee and what we put out to the world is a mediocre version of an extreme sports fanatic in a
knitting class. Definitely something to leave the world on edge.
So, have your FULL cup of coffee (this should not be followed AGAINST medical advice) and
live with intentions. Don't sacrifice the quality of your life for a "few cents more saved." Get
out there and live your life!
You're worth every dime!
