Expand Your Mindset
E. Danyell Wallet
There are, in essence, two reasons to travel. One reason for travel is to complete your
daily duties, ie, business trips and all things geared towards a defined end goal. The other is to
step outside of your everyday routine, add experiences and memories to your life log, and to
enjoy the journey to the softly defined destination. This is not to say that the "all business"
traveler cannot enjoy the journey, nor does it exclude the "make memories" traveler from having
a bit of business to attend to along the way. These two differ only because of their mindsets.
AB Traveller is determined to complete his task and get back to "life." MM Traveller is
determined to set down every day tasks and live life. They may not sound dissimilar, but they
are.
With an AB traveller, you can expect for his timeline to be tight-- even rigid. His ability to
have fun in his new surroundings are dampened by the need to ensure that he is ready for the
big meeting, has distributed his quota of product X, or has made a great impression with the
company that his employer is trying to merge with or grandma. With an MM traveller, you can
expect the unexpected. The timeline may not shift, necessarily, but the plans often times do.
Caution is thrown to the wind and usually with it, a set budget.
Consider the roles of these two travellers. They are both travelling. Either could easily
do the others tasks or implement them into the days goals. So why is there a disconnect? The
disconnect comes in either like a bed bug, you don't know it's there until you're bitten, or as a
tyrannosaurus rex, as aggressive and dominant as it can be. The disconnect is mindset. If you
put your shoe covered foot into a mound of freshly turned soil, your foot will sink and make a
bed of it, tenderly cradling and possibly suffocating you. Conversely, if you place your shoe
covered foot onto ground that has set, and not been turned, you will remain on top and you will
be secure and could, for the sake of argument, bake in the sun without protection from the heat
rays.
What is the point of this nonsense? Well, travel is a well received and usually pleasant
experience. Many companies such as Booking.com, Cheaptickets.com and travelocity.com to
name a few, have made their millions by offering the best travel package for your destination.
Luxury or not so luxury hotels. Rental cars for one or for a family. Excursions or business in
mind. These companies look after you as a liaison--the middle man for all of your travel needs.
When you travel with the AB mindset, you don't want the MM package, and intuitively, when you
travel as the MM mindset, you don't want to be stuck in a place where you can't explore.
The mindset that you cling to, either as a bed bug or a t-rex, will ultimately determine the
satisfaction of your trip.
So...Before you plan that get away that's next to the sister office, or decide to take your
laptop on your kayaking excursion, check your mindset. Are you traveling for enjoyment or
because it's your employment or family duty?
Plan your trip to fit your mindset because NOBODY likes a party pooper
