Peter confirms that the organization he works for has made significant efforts to enhance
patient safety and improve the patient outcome in the last few years. Such efforts include
changes in policies which had improved patient outcome and reduced mortality rates. However,
he feels that compliance with bedside report needs to be majorly improved upon. Nurses play a
significant role in the future healthcare system, and they must utilize the opportunity to elevate
their practice to another level and make their profession better. To do that, nurses must start by
making significant changes to their practice and begin to implement more evidence-based
practices because it can help enhance quality care and patient outcome. Communication with the
patients and their families in all matters regarding treatment, services, and care is essential in
enhancing a culture of safety(Malloch, K., & Porter-O'Grady, T. (Eds.). 2010). It ensures the safe
handoff of care between the RNs by involving the patients and their families. Also, it gives
patients a feeling of inclusion while ensuring nurse accountability.
Cristy states that the leadership in the hospital she works for lacks sufficient experience
in the state's mental health rules and regulations. The hospital only opened recently in May 2019,
and the rules are different from those of other states where the leaders had worked before.
Education and experience are some of the main issues for addressing evidence-based practice.
The facility has already started implementing EBP by finding a provider who can offer
methadone detoxification to patients who are withdrawing from opioid dependence in addition to
behavioral and therapy management. Also, they intend to start educating and training nurses and
behavioral health professionals on how to work with detoxing patients appropriately. The
statement is correct as individual factors like years of experience and confidence in practicing as
well as organizational factors such as access to resources and supportive leadership are strongly

associated with the practice of EBP. Competent leadership contributes to quality care and patient
safety (Melnyk, B. M., & Fineout-Overholt, E. (Eds.). 2011). Such leadership forms informed
decision-makers whose independent actions are founded on the basis of evidence, education, and
experience.
Tammy stated that the main issue in addressing evidence-based nursing practice was
insufficient preparation. Some nurses lack the opportunity to get a program that allows them to
get further research and leadership courses in nursing. Not all registered nurses had a chance to
enroll for a BSN, and a significant number of nurses are older nurses who are almost retiring,
and thus, they are not interested in obtaining a BSN. Nursing education is essential as it enables
nurses to keep up with current technologies and trends. However, most nurses do not understand
the importance of EBP in nursing practice, and that leads to reluctance and resistance. They stick
to the old ways of doing things. Tammy is right. Furthering education in the nursing field allows
nurses to earn additional skills and learn advanced techniques to improve patient care (Rebeschi,
L., & Aronson, B. 2009). Additionally, it will enable nurses to make better healthcare decisions
and enhance awareness of community health.
Katherine, who was working on a practicum capstone for a nursing college, stated that
the issue is the starting point for where nurses learn what evidence-based practice and how to
implement it in their work. She suggests that the first step should be making nurses understand
the priority that needs to be set on caring for patients by means of EBP. There is also the need to
implement interactive clinical experiences where student nurses can apply these new skills.
Moreover, students should be taught how to advocate for themselves and their patients since the
use of EBP is not a priority once they enter the workforce. The statement is correct because
helping nurses understand EBP is crucial as it helps in the healthcare transformation. EBP calls

for the need to redesign healthcare, making it efficient, safe, and effective (Martin, D. L., Brewer,
M. K., & Barr, N. 2011). Organizations need to launch initiatives that educate nurses on
evidence-based practice and allow them to implement it. RNs with a higher educational level or
advanced qualifications tend to have a greater extent of EBP compared to those with lower
qualifications. What are the RNs patterns for adopting and implementing EBP?
