FCE Essay Explanation
If you are a student preparing for the Cambridge English: First (FCE), you must know how to
write an essay (it's a compulsory writing task). First, you can see an example task and after
that an essay with explanations:
There are different ways of studying English. You can learn English in your own country or you can
you learn it in an English-speaking country.
Do you think it is more effective to learn English in an English-speaking country? (Essay task)
1. Introduction:
Many people consider English a lingua franca, because it's commonly used as a communication
means between different people. Although millions speak it, there are many others who are still in
the process of learning. Some prefer to study in their own countries, while others choose to master it
in an English-speaking country. (This is my introduction, where I've put some general info about the
language and I have rewritten the question in the task. The last sentence is my thesis sentence and
directly leads to the main body)
2. Main Body: as you know the FCE format requires three arguments
2. 1
Living in a country where English is the spoken language indeed increases the effectiveness. Most
of the time you have no other choice but to practise the language if you want to understand or to be
understood and have a normal pace of life. (This is my first argument – communicating in English
in and out of class)
2.2
Nevertheless, some people suffer from homesickness – they cannot get used to the new
environment, all the unknown people and situations, away from their families and friends. They
prefer to study in their homelands. (I've introduced this argument by a contrast using
“nevertheless”; this is my second argument – difficulties of being away from home.)
2.3
Some people have found a way to combine the mentioned above – using the Internet. While living
in your own home, you can always find millions of native English speakers to practise every day
with. It's both practical and efficient, and saves money, time and worries. (This is my third
argument)
3. Conclusion : summary and personal opinion/general comment.
Considering everything so far, I think that learning a new language, in particular English, depends
mostly on your attitude and approach. However, living in an English-speaking country would
definitely increase your chances of becoming an expert in the field. (The first sentence summarizes
everything. The second sentence states my personal opinion.)
