INTRODUCTION
The inspection was conducted by a team of technical officers from State Department for
Public Works in conjunction with the client’s representative. The objective of the Inspection
was in line with the client’s request for assessment of the status of the existing fire detection
and suppression system. The electrical inspection was mainly focused on the fire detection
and sound alarm system which comprises of: Fire Alarm Panel, Smoke detectors, Heat
detectors, Break glasses, Alarm sounders, Emergency exit signs and other accessories.
1.1. OBSERVATIONS
Upon inspection of the fire detection and sound alarm system, it was established that:
•
The existing fire detection and sound alarm system was not functional. i.e. either
the fire panel was faulty or there was power failure to the Fire Panel as it did not
turn on despite several attempts to switch it on.
•
The existing fire detection and sound alarm system mainly comprised of break
glasses and sound alarms.
•
There were no smoke detectors in offices and other rooms and no heat detectors
in the kitchens.
•
There were no LED exit signs.
•
Some break-glasses were broken or missing while others had their covers on.
1.2. RECOMMENDATION
Based on observation we recommend the following:
•
A new fire detection and alarm system be installed with the main panel at the
reception where the existing fire alarm panel is.
•
Repeater panels be installed for each block and connected to the main panel.
•
Each floor to have its own loop from their repeater fire panel according to the
number of floors (zones).
•
The existing fire alarm panel be removed.
•
New fire detection and alarm system be installed with a 1 zone/loop system for
the Armory with an addressable fire alarm panel mounted at the reception.
•
New fire detection and alarm system be installed with a 1 zone/loop system for
the Finger prints section with an addressable fire alarm panel.
•
Training of the client user on the operation and trouble-shooting of the fire
detection and sound alarm system.
•
All Break glasses to be installed should be resettable.
•
Smoke detectors be installed in the rooms/offices and heat detectors be installed in
the kitchens also.
•
Install LED lit fire exit signs.
