Publications
The following are samples of some of the advertisements, brochures, magazines, manuals, newsletters, and technical
articles designed, written, photographed, and published by David W. Barrett.
Corporate Magazines
Corporate magazines include customer outreach and loyalty publications, intended to keep current customers involved
with a product, are also excellent marketing pieces to attract new customers.
One of these was Corvette News, a quarterly magazine I had the good fortune to write and manage for Chevrolet.
I redesigned the "look" and the "read" of this high visibility magazine, adding several new regular features plus a new fullspread product centerfold and dynamic wrap-around cover. I also:
Originated and generated most of the articles, including photographs
Incorporated articles and photography contracted from freelance talent, as well as celebrity interviews and
technical information from Chevrolet Engineering
Assigned graphics projects to both corporate and freelance artists
Contracted and managed the print production and assured delivery schedules
In addition to customer oriented magazines, I designed, wrote, and produced several sales and service merchandising
magazines, including:
Professional Service Council – Chevrolet Service
PRO – Chevrolet Sales
Newsletters
Many of the newsletter publications I have created were adjuncts to sales training programs and included:
SalesTalk — Nissan
Video News — Lincoln-Mercury
KeyClub — Hyundai
High Technology — Buick
GMC Truck News — GMC
Hot Line — Ford Truck
Close-Up News — Lincoln-Mercury
AcuraLink
Most of my trade newsletter experience is automotive service related technician and management including the
following publications.
Only the Best – Chevrolet
Tech Net Times — Hyundai
Shop Talk — Ford
Movin’ Parts — GM Parts
PentaStar Parts — Chrysler
Turbo & Hi-Tech Performance — Mag-Tech
Productions
Front Line — Honda
Auction & Surplus — Haiek Publications
Spec Sheets & Brochures
These are two of the brochures and spec sheets I designed and wrote for Xybion. Each brochure featured some aspect
of electronic shuttering and low light sensitivity, which was incorporated into different camera models.
In addition, I wrote documentation for several computer-aided atmospheric diagnosing cameras manufactured for the
EPA and other government departments.
Manuals
Manuals are typically part of the package that’s delivered with a machine and may include instructions to:
Install
Operate
Maintain
Repair
the equipment.
I have written numerous manuals for global companies as diverse as:
CP Manufacturing
Ford
General Atomics Aeronautics
General Motors
GKN Aerospace
Hewlett Packard
Hyundai
IMED
Nissan
Respironics
Scholle
Xybion
All of my manuals are written in plain English. Technical terms
are explained in simple language with photographs, drawings and other graphic elements to make the manual not just
comprehensive, but also easy to read and understand.
Video
Other technology experience includes writing and directing videos.
These videos involved both the features of electro-mechanical products, such
as Allied Signal’s electronically controlled fuel injectors, and the
engineering/manufacturing techniques employed to make the products, which
were then made available to other component manufacturers.
My ability to script video that described all aspects of Allied Signal marketing
required my understanding the priorities of intended audience Engineer,
Sales personnel, OEM as well as the product and the process.
Subsequently, I designed and wrote a number of technician video training
programs for automotive manufacturers. These training programs, which
included video and “hands-on” assignments, were created to show dealership
technicians how to diagnose and repair automotive systems that incorporated
Allied-Signal components.
Chevrolet, Nissan, and Hyundai are three of the Auto OEMs for whom I have designed video technical training programs
on such topics as:
Antilock Brake and Emissions
Computer Engine Management
Electronic Fuel Injection
HVAC Systems
Hydraulic Braking and Driveline Systems
Training
I have also designed, written and produced training related to tracking and recoding maintenance competency of
hardware components controlled by software systems.
Designing Software User training courses was basically my
assignment at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).
The program, MARS (Monitoring & Asset Reliability System) was
designed to give maintenance engineers the ability to modify
regularly scheduled maintenance for a myriad of plant
components based on operational history that was tracked and
recorded by the program.
Since these courses were intended for the engineers who actually
operated the plant, the training modules I wrote had to be
exceptionally coherent and job specific.
In addition, each course besides the Instructor Guide and User
Guide had to have collateral materials such as Job Aids and
web-based (SCE intranet) reinforcement modules that reprised
computer screens, cursor movements, and commands that were
presented during the training sessions using Camtasia.
