In the last ten years, the cost of data storage has plummeted by 80%. A consumer can get a
4TB drive for under £100, that’s just £0.025 per GB but while drive costs are measured in
pennies per gigabyte, the reality of enterprise storage is much more difficult to calculate and
much more expensive.
One of the most common enterprise cloud storage concerns is cost. Organisations often
move to cloud storage to reduce their costs; however, the expected savings don't always
materialise. A study found that 31 percent of organisations surveyed had realised that cloud
storage did not reduce costs to the levels they had forecasted. Cloud storage pricing is
complicated, and organisations sometimes struggle to find the best value for their
requirements.
Most cloud storage providers have different prices for each of their storage services, archive
and backup storage costing less than primary block or object storage.
The simplest way to reduce storage costs is to reduce the volume of data stored and to
ensure that the right data is stored in the right storage service, as not all data is equal and not
all data holds value for the company. Holding data on high performance storage that should
be archived
is wasted
money. The challenge is to know what data is stored

apply classifications to the different types of data. Only around 15 percent of a company's
data is business critical, a third is redundant, obsolete or trivial data and around a half is dark
data that contains many unknowns.
Many companies are reluctant to delete the dark data because of the mistaken belief that
more data means more value. However, the dark data is often made up of employees’
personal data; photos, music, videos and social media content. None of this has any value to
the company.
A company could dramatically slash its data storage and backup costs if it addressed the
redundant, obsolete and trivial data and deleted much of its dark data. To do this however
they need to know what that data actually is and to classify it. For many companies this is
the real issue, it is a task that they feel requires multiple tools and a lot of manual work.
It doesn't have to be such a problem, in fact, it can be addressed without having to resort to
multiple tools and manual processes. SCC’s ManageSMART Information Intelligence
service gives a business full visibility of their data right across all their data stores. It will
turn data into information and ultimately intelligence.
In a time where the volume of data storage is about to grow, lack of visibility will lead to
increased unnecessary cost and non-compliance. That is not an option.

Very true Mark... The cheaper it gets, the more we store.... And then the more we need the right backup
solutions to match! Not to mention the most efficient ways to access that data, organise it, etc.
Something a lot of people forget about, especially at home.
