The courtroom had long emptied,
but Emma Carter remained seated
—hands folded tightly on her lap,
eyes tracing the wood grain of the
defense table like it held the
answers she didn’t find in today’s
verdict.
“You always did like dramatic
exits,” a familiar voice teased from
behind her.
She didn’t have to turn to know
who it was. That deep, annoyingly
confident tone belonged to only
one person. Daniel Reed.
“You won, Reed. Congratulations,”
she said flatly, standing to gather
her notes. “Feel free to gloat
somewhere else.”
He stepped closer, his shadow
falling across her papers. “I’m not
here to gloat. I’m here with a
proposition.”
Emma raised an eyebrow. “Let me
guess: you want me to defend
another one of your morally grey
clients?”
Daniel smirked. “Actually… I want
your help. There’s something off
about the Alvarez case. You saw it
too, didn’t you?”
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then: “Why would I trust you?”
“Because as much as we disagree
in court,” he said softly, “you know
I play fair. And because you hate
loose ends more than you hate
me.”
That last part wasn’t entirely false.
Emma stared at him, heart tugging
between logic and instinct. One
thing was certain—whatever they
were walking into, it wouldn’t be
simple. But then again, nothing
with Daniel Reed ever was.
