What could your manager do better to make people feel more
included at work?
Topic 1: Communication
Theme 1: Trust and recognition of abilities.
Example: ‘’My manager could stop micromanaging me and my coworkers and allow us to do our
jobs efficiently. My manager doesn’t trust that I am doing my job because I am new and so
young. She told me that she didn’t want to hire me in the first place but believes I deserved a
chance. She goes behind my back and contacts my staff without my knowledge then acts
oblivious when asked about it.’’
Theme 2: Management - Staff feedback and quality of communication.
Example: ‘’Clearer communication of expectations, being more open to collaboration and
suggestions from others, including staff of all levels in meetings and decisions, being less critical
of different opinions and ideas. I feel stifled by my manager when I should feel empowered by
them.’’
Theme 3: Fair distribution of workload and duties.
Example: ‘’Allow other workers to help carry their own responsibilities and not have all the work
dumped on older staff member I’ve been going through this redundant episode.’’

Theme 3: Recognize Offensive Language
Example: ‘’Listen more and change some of the negative statements which they make which
can be offensive to people of color. Unfortunately, I doubt they even recognize that some of the
things they say are offensive. For example, when a person in leadership has remarked on the
terrible job that "those people" in the group homes are doing, they should realize that it sounds
like they are talking about people of color. Need to realize that direct care staff listen carefully to
leadership people's casual remarks.’’

Theme 1: Presence of Leadership At The Workplace
Example: It would be nice to see the CEO and other senior leaders around various work sites
more often. This would be a good way to get to know staff and build a relationship versus just
once a month virtual town hall meetings.

Example: ‘’A lot of times it feels like there is a lot of talk about doing things but do not always
see the actions associated with the promises.’’
Theme 3: Appropriate Language For Culture Building
Example: ‘’Senior leadership doesn't seem to understand how problematic it is that white, cis
men are the ones addressing DEI and Juneteenth while using outdated language. Pass the mic
to someone appropriate.’’

Theme 1: Take The First Step
Example: ‘’Show initiative to those employees who go above and beyond.’’
Theme 2: Truthful And Honest Communication
Example: ‘’it would be great if senior leaders would communicate in full about things that
concern the employees as well as the members when it comes to health and well being. On all
levels. We have the right to know what’s going on as it happens not days or weeks or months
after. That breaks trust. Knowing that the company had knowledge of an issue and dailies to
inform us to make more cautious and educated choices.’’
Theme 3: Acknowledgement Of Every Group Of The Workforce
Example: ‘’Do more for the DSP's who work hard everyday to give the clients the best
experiences each and every day.’’

Theme 1: Creation Of Better Salary Opportunities
Example: ‘’Work more on us getting higher pay.’’
Theme 2: Unbalanced Work - Compensation Rate
Example: ‘’I would like them to consider how difficult it is for staff To make ends meet with the
amount of money people make. Understanding we have family and should it paid our worth.
There is always additional work being added with no pay increase. It’s like we working for free.
Staff use personal cars driving Envision’s members around daily. We don’t get oil changes, no
gas card, no car maintenance reimbursement.’’
Theme 3: Appropriate growth Opportunities For Everyone
Example: ‘’Stop promoting people into positions without process. Start promoting legacy staff
into new greater compensated opportunities. Change not knowing the staff under the executive
branch-especially well-reviewed performers of color.’’

Example: ‘’I would like to see leadership start providing updates about how staff diversity
impacts clients.’’
Theme 2: More Empathy From Leadership
Example: ‘’The senior leaders should actually be in the staff shoes on a daily basis to properly
understand the over work load.’’
Theme 3: Fully Embracing The Company’s Values
Example: ‘’Incorporate the values and mission of the Agency in their actions. Incorporate and
facilitate training for all employees, especially those who are providing direct care to our clients
(members).’’
