Whistleblowing is the act of exposing a rot, misconduct or an in any corporate
firm or set up. This act at points seems selfless and may be done out of pity and selfawareness on the impact it may have on the society at large but it’s also one of the many
disputed and controversial decisions one has to make.
A whistleblower is a person that reports an organizations’ misconduct .this
misconduct may have happened in the past, maybe a recent occurrence or maybe in the
planning stages.
Whistleblowing is classified into two: internal and external whistleblowing. Internal
whistleblowing is a scenario where one reports to another within the same organization while
the latter is whereby one reports an organizations’ misconduct to external bodies, either the
media or the law enforcement agencies.
Just like with any other corporation and any public office, the oath of abiding by the
corporate laws that govern any organization is something that is always taken seriously.
Anyone that goes against any of these rules is bound to face the full wrath of the law though
there are rules for whichever company which means that one may not face the law but will
face the corporal punishment set by any company.

Whistleblowing serves the same purpose a tip-off serves to a journalist but more
ethically and professionally than any other. Though having several merits to whichever
organization, it is also accompanied by disadvantages and shortcomings like any other
decision. With the public worrying about the exposing of rot or wrongdoing, the corporate
sector worries more about its reputation. Still the public worries about the accountability,
integrity and the ability to abide by its values’ part of any corporation. This paper seeks to
substantiate when whistleblowing is permissible, under what scenarios and circumstances.
2. Arguments in favor of Whistleblowing
Personal values and characters come in handy when whistleblowing is mentioned.
Most times a whistleblower will be willing to uphold their values and expose any scam in a
corporation. The desire to remain true to oneself, to a company and also the nation at large
brings people to a point of making tough choices. Though there may be more demerits than
merits on whistleblowing, one’s decision to uphold their values or remain true to their
character is what moves most of them.
Whistleblowing helps in fighting corruption. Corruption is every corporation’s
nightmare because it drains the company financially but it also drags the company down.
Anyone exposing any malpractice or wrongdoing in a corporation does justice not only to
that corporation but also to the population at large. Whistleblowing is oftentimes underrated
and unwanted but it’s one of the best things that can ever happen in any corporation. If at all
the whistleblower's intentions are for the better part of the company.
Allowing anybody gets away with any sort of crime is a downside in every
democracy, thus whistleblowing helps in ensuring that wrongdoers don’t get away with crime
and also don’t get rewarded. Allowing someone to slip away and not face the rule of law

means that a company’s profits go down to the trenches and also makes everybody lose
interest and hope in the justice as well as encouraging others or attempt all sorts of ways to
defraud any corporation since it is easier to get away with it.

Dr. Marsha Coleman’s case is a perfect example. She left her highly
regarded job at the environmental protection agency in the United States to speak out
against racism and vanadium poisoning in South African mines. Her campaign won
her a perfect verdict which led to the passage of the No Fear act.in her case, she lost
her career, endangered her very own family and even cost many lives of the mine
workers. She was willing to stand and support that which she believed in, believing
that racial segregation has no part in the modern world, she blew the whistle on
racism that ruled the vanadium mines of South Africa.(Coleman,2011)
3. Arguments in opposition of Whistleblowing
Career loss .The whistleblower, on the other hand, risks losing the job or probably an
entire career even though they have done the company justice. Many a time anyone
conspiring to do any harm to a company doesn’t want to be exposed. Exposing them would
jeopardize everything and as such, they would want to fight to clean their name which
includes retrenchment or summary dismissal of the whistleblower. Anyone planning to play
the role of a whistleblower must be ready to face every merit and demerit that comes with
such an act. Also one may have difficulties in getting employed after such an act in certain
fields.
Lengthy proceedings costing money. The proceedings in such cases may be dragged
through every judicial system in a country just to suppress the whistleblower. Sometimes they
come accompanied by witnesses withdrawing from testifying or judges withdrawing from
presiding over such cases.in this case, the case hearing or mentioning may be moved to

further dates and as with any legal proceedings, both parties may incur huge expenses which
in turn may even cause the whistleblower to withdraw the case or run bankrupt.

A stakeholder is any person or organization that has a legitimate interest on a
given situation, action or enterprise, whose actions can greatly affect the ability of an
organization to effectively implement its strategies and achieve its set goals or targets.
Stakeholders can be employees, customers, associates consultants, etc. And have the duty
to express any concerns or speak up on any matters affecting an organization .these
concerns may be on unethical conduct, illegal practices or objectionable conduct, etc.

I have never experienced any whistleblowing cases. But in the event of one
happening, I would calculate every move. Honestly, with all considerations, I would
firstly be counting in my safety if at all am the whistleblower. If not, I would also hope
for the best in terms of safety for the persons involved and a pull through the cases i.e. if
the situation cannot be solved amicably within the organization.

Conclusion
Whistleblowing despite all the shortcomings that accompany it should be encouraged
through all transparency. I would advocate for training on whistleblowing, teachings or
lessons so one can be fully aware of any consequences arising from their actions. One doing
something with a clear understanding of how the consequences do it with all the caution. This
will reduce cases and scenarios where a whistleblower leaks any sort of information for the
sake of fame without any substantial evidence to back up his/her claim.
Witness protection should also be made mandatory.in the event of someone giving out
information that threatens one's success and one that may bring the downfall of a company.
Anybody suffering the losses may decide to revenge which means that the whistleblower’s

life is at stake. The government should take whistleblowing seriously especially now that it
involves individuals of different temperaments and characters.
A protection program will mean that someone is enrolled through it, the information
he is leaking is scrutinized to ascertain that it's worth being given out. This will establish and
help identify the genuine whistleblowers intended for the good of an organization from those
who are looking for short fame and the money that whistleblowers are rewarded with.
Encourage anonymous reporting.
Rewarding whistleblowers should also be regulated. Whistleblowing should not be
entirely on build on rewards. In this case, someone may just sift through waiting for the
slightest information so they can rush to the point of being rewarded without even
substantiating any claim.
Even if rewarding is to be done, it should not be done regularly because it may seem
that the only way for people to remaining true to their values and virtues is by whistleblowing
so they can be rewarded. Encourage loyalty and trust for every individual as virtues that
govern one’s life and whistleblowing will be made easier. Also, these funds can be channeled
elsewhere. Reward whistleblower’s when it’s necessary.
