Why do Dogs Love Crates?
Dogs are, by nature, den animals and feel secure in small, enclosed spaces. Most dogs will seek out a place in your home that will mimic a den. You will often find them sleeping under a table or desk. Dog crates make excellent dens and can serve as a refuge, a hangout and a bedroom. It is very important that the dog crate is never used as punishment - the crate must always be regarded as a safe and special retreat.
Why a Wire Crate?
A wire crate is recommended to allow your dog optimum visibility of her surroundings. Your dog will be most relaxed if she is sheltered but still able to view her surroundings without having to get up. She will rest longer and quieter. Wire crates are designed for proper ventilation.
What Size of Crate Does Your Dog Need?
Precision Pet Products' Puppy Panels allow you to adjust the size of the crate and are available for larger crates while the puppy is growing. The dog should be able to comfortably walk in, turn around and lay down in the crate. Your pet should not feel cramped, but do not use a crate that is too big, that will defeat the purpose of giving the dog the sense of having his own enclosed "den."

Important Note: Always take care to remove both collar and tags prior to your dog entering her crate. Allow your dog to explore the crate on her own. You can toss some of her favorite toys or treats inside and show interest in the crate to encourage her curiosity. Leave the door open during the introduction period. NEVER force your dog into her crate and ALWAYS praise her anytime she enters on her own.

PRECISION PET PRODUCTS POLICY FOR SUBMITTED IDEAS
Over the years, Precision Pet Products (Precision Pet) has received many unsolicited ideas and suggestions from people outside our organization. Some of these ideas have been excellent and have contributed to attaining our objectives of better serving our markets and maintaining our leadership in the fields of endeavor in which we are engaged. The opportunity to review these outside ideas has been and is sincerely appreciated. However, it is necessary that anyone submitting an idea understand that Precision Pet maintains Research, Development and Marketing Departments wherein substantial efforts are devoted to the development of new products and processes and the creation of new merchandising and promotional ideas. It is, therefore, not unusual that a majority of the ideas submitted to us over the years fall into one of four categories:
(1) those which have been considered by us before;
(2) those not within our field of interest;
(3) those which have already been developed by Precision Pet; or
(4) those which are in the public domain.
The last category, of course, represents ideas that are freely available to anyone. Because most of these ideas fall into the above-discussed categories and because review of the numerous ideas submitted to us requires our considerable expenditure of time and money, it is necessary that certain policies be followed in order for us to review any idea in a businesslike manner while maintaining Precision Pet’s freedom to pursue its own research and product development. For these reasons, Precision Pet has adopted the following policy for submitted ideas:
1. In receiving or accepting an idea for consideration and evaluation, Precision Pet assumes no obligations other than those set forth herein.
2. No idea will be accepted for consideration by Precision Pet unless it is submitted, in writing, together with this Policy for Submitted Ideas signed and returned by the submitter.
3. No idea or disclosure material will be received or accepted in confidence, on the basis of a confidential relationship, nor under any guarantee that Precision Pet shall maintain the secrecy of the idea.
4. If the idea is found to be of no interest to Precision Pet, the submitter will be so notified.
5. In consideration of Precision Pet’s evaluation of the submitted idea and of any further disclosures, either written or oral, concerning the same subject matter, the submitter agrees to release Precision Pet from any liability in connection with the submitted idea or use thereof, except any such liability that may arise under a valid patent, trademark or copyright now or hereafter issued to the submitter, or under any formal contract between Precision Pet and the submitter that may be entered into hereafter.
6. If the idea appears to be of interest to it, Precision Pet may enter into negotiations with you to explore the possibility of acquiring rights therein. No obligation as to compensation or other matters is assumed by Precision Pet unless and until a formal written contract in regard to such matters has been executed and the obligation shall be only such as expressed in that formal written contract.
7. No obligation will be assumed by Precision Pet for the return of disclosure material and the submitter agrees that Precision Pet may retain a copy of any disclosure materials as record of what was disclosed to Precision Pet.
8. Any and all previous discussions or agreements by any agent of Precision Pet are merged into these conditions and no such previous discussions or agreements shall be binding on Precision Pet or be of any force or effect.
9. The submitter represents and warrants that he has the right to disclose the idea. I have read and agree to all terms and provisions of Precision Pet Products Policy for Submitted Ideas.

It started with singing canaries
Our story begins in 1926 when an almost penniless 26-year-old Max Stern decided to leave his native Germany for the promise of America. Germany was suffering from the ravages of the First World War. The allure of America’s stability, freedom and economic opportunity beckoned.
Stern went back to his native Germany again and again, returning to America each time with more singing canaries that he now sold to a growing customer base including R.H. Macy, Sears Roebuck, F.W. Woolworth, W. T. Grant, S.S. Kresge and others. By 1932, Stern was the largest livestock importer in America and decided to expand into packaged bird foods. The Hartz Mountain line of pet products was born.
Beyond birds—with a best-selling product
In 1959, Stern’s son joined the company and expanded Hartz Mountain’s product lines into goldfish, tropical fish and a full line of aquatic supplies.
By the early 1980’s Hartz products were sold in more than 40,000 U.S. and Canadian retail outlets. In the 1990’s Hartz continued to expand product lines with the acquisition of the esteemed Wardley® brand of fish food and supplies.
In 2000, The Hartz Mountain Corporation was sold to the J.W. Childs Associates, LP, a leading private equity investment firm, which gave a renewed focus to research and development.
In 2011, Sumitomo took on a partner and Hartz became a joint venture of Sumitomo and Unicharm Corporation, a leading consumer goods company based in Japan.
Today Hartz is 1,500 products strong—catering to dogs, cats, parakeets, canaries, parrots, cockatiels, finches, goldfish, tropical fish, reptiles, ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits.

NECESSITY—AND LOVE—IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION AT KONG
Our founder, Joe Markham, loved his retired police dog, Fritz, but did not love his destructive chewing habits. Where other dogs might have chewed your shoes or favorite purse, Fritz loved to crunch on rocks, sticks and other harmful items. Fritz’s teeth were wearing down and his need for stimulation and play was not being met, and Joe was frustrated.
One day, while working on a VW Bus, Joe began throwing out car parts to Fritz to lure him away from those rocks. Fritz was immediately taken with a rubber suspension part and dropped it in Joe’s lap to play. The erratic bounce and toughness of the rubber inspired Joe.

How to Patent an Idea
Inventors are applying for patents because they fear that someone may steal their idea. This fear is real, but unfounded. They are motivated by their fear of the unknown.
Thankfully, inventors have another option: Provisional patent applications, or PPAs. A provisional patent application protects your idea for up to one year and allows you to label your idea as "patent pending." PPAs are fantastic tools for inventors who are just starting to figure out if they have a profitable idea on their hands. For one, they’re inexpensive, unlike patents. The USPTO’s filing fee is a mere $65. And with a little help, we think independent inventors are capable of writing them themselves.
Inventors should use the 12 months of protection afforded to them to shop around their idea. Is there any interest? Does the idea have market potential? If after one year you discover that yes, there is demand for your idea and it can be manufactured at a reasonable price point, you can file a non-provisional patent application.
Please, if you’re thinking about intellectual property protection, do the following steps first.
1. Read as much as you can about PPAs. The USPTO’s website has great information. They also have excellent customer service.
2. Do a Google product search. Is your idea truly new? Does it have a point of difference? Don’t be alarmed if you find a similar product, because that’s actually a good thing. Now you know that a market for your product invention exists. What you are trying to determine is how your product sets itself apart from others.
3. Do a prior art search. First, search using Google patents. (You can also use the USPTO’s search function, but it is more difficult.) Try to find ideas that are similar to yours. We think this is fun, because you can also hire someone to do it for you. However, it is possible to become a pro at searching for prior art pretty quickly. Again, don’t be alarmed when you find ideas that are similar to yours. Trust us, you will find them. Finding similar ideas does not mean your invention cannot be patented. Start reading the patents’ claims closely. How is yours different? What you discover in the prior art is very telling. It will give you a roadmap of what to do next. If you find too many ideas that are similar to yours, then the field may be too crowded. Hooray! You’ve just saved yourself $20,000.
Do You Really Need a Patent?
If you ask a first-time inventor who is afraid of people stealing his idea? Of course he’ll say yes. But the reality is, patents don’t prevent me-too products from hitting the market. The most powerful companies in the world aren’t able to ward off copycats. Patents are tools to be used strategically. After sparring in Federal Court, Stephen knows for sure: You don’t ever own anything. It’s all about perceived ownership.
