Are You a Tech-Savvy User?
A Glimpse into Indonesian Netizens’ Behavior
Up to 74% of internet users worldwide have social media account(s), and guess how many of
them are Indonesians. One research conducted by Ministry of Communication and Informatics
in 2014 revealed that 30 million of Indonesian kids and teenagers are netters. The number
amassed nearly 30% of total netters in Indonesia which amount up to 83.7 million by 2014
according to e-Marketer. Other users include housewives and employees.
What about their activities? APJII (Asosiasi Penyedia Jaringan Internet Indonesia, Indonesian
Internet Service Providers Association) had illustrated the activities of Indonesian netters in this
sleek infographic:

And Marketeer estimated that most Indonesian netizens are using internet for more than 3
hours.
While this might be a positive sign, the ever-increasing connectivity in Indonesia wasn’t
followed by sufficient education on coping with the newly introduced lifestyle. For instance, the
percentage of students studying independently via internet adds up to no more than 30.83% as
stated by marketing.co.id. Studies from Marketeer also show that only 30% of Indonesian
netizens do research on a product or purchase in contrast to Thailand netizens in which 85% of
them would explore a product’s information on the net.
Indonesian social media users also rank as 2nd largest on Facebook and 4th on twitter according
to salingsilang.com as quoted by a user, qnoyzone, on blogdetik. On one hand, it was a valuable
aid in encouraging e-commerce in Indonesia as well as mobile marketing and citizen journalism.

On the other hand, the large scale of social media use is not without feud: from the excessive
display of emotion on social media down to legal dispute. The latest being a photo of Indonesian

Indonesia.

And we’re not even talking about more complicated problems: cyber bullying and pornography.
Unicef Indonesia released an astonishing data that 52% of their respective respondents, namely
children and teenagers ranging from 10 to 19 years old are exposed to pornography, and 13% of
them were victims of cyberbullying.
These statistics prove that without enough education, even a convenient device like internet and
social media can be quite harmless. The key to being safe is, of course, to be a savvy user. So, be
savvy, stay safe!
