Humorous and Table Topics Arrive
WSU Vancouver hosts a Toastmasters competition
On Oct.ober 24th, Washington State University Vancouver hosted a district-wide
Ttoastmasters competition. A wide variety of people attended the event, ranging from actual
members, to the general public, and even to several governors from different districts. There
was a reception beforehand, where everyone was able to help themselves to several
refreshments before the event took place.
The two competitions that took place during the event were the humorous and tabletopic speeches. A humorous speech is where the contestants utilize their public speaking skills in
order to portray a comedic story to the audience, on which eight people participated in that
competition. The seven contestants for the table-topic speeches were given their topics on the
spot, and speak about their assigned topic for approximately two minutes. The table-topic
speeches, however, were extemporaneous, meaning contestants were given their topic on the
spot. From there, the contestants had to speak for about two minutes, on which there were
seven participants. After both competitions came to a close, the winner for both competitions
was insert winner X.
What exactly is a toastmasters club? The Toastmasters are a club about “Improving
communication skills and leader ship skills for everyone that joins,”, said Megan Slaker,
pPresident of Salmon Speakers, WSU Vancouver’s official toastmaster club. According to
President Slaker, Dr. Allison Coffin, who wanted a toastmasters club for the a younger audience,
originally thought up “Salmon Speakers.”. From there, 20 charter members were then sought
after for the club, since these are the base requirements in order to be considered an official
club by Toastmasters International.
President Slaker went on to establish the importance of the club, saying that. She states
that “whatever you do, you’re going to talk to people,”, emphasizing that no matter what
occupation you chose to pursue, it helps to know how to communicate with other people.
President Slaker also mentioned that being an official member of Toastmasters looks very good
on a resume.
Salmon Speakers meets every Monday around 7pm at the salmon creek Burgerville.
There is a seven -dollar monthly membership, six dollars to be an actual member of
toastmasters international, and one dollar for Salmon Creek so they can purchase things such as
badges, pens, and other things to help keep the club going. However, Salmon Speakers pays in
six-month increments, meaning that members would pay 42 dollars every six months rather
than pay from month-to-month. President Slaker is very prideful of the club,.” “We are always
having fun during our meetings, always laughing.” .
