Spokane campus dabbles in medicine
Washington State University Spokane plans to implements a medical school sometime in
2017
An ongoing problem nationwide, according to the Washington State University
Spokane website, has been “The shortage of primary care physicians…. during the past
100 years.” The website also states that Washington state is “severely underserved, with
10 or fewer doctors per 10,000 residents.” In hope of addressing the shortage of medical
physicians, WSU Spokane has announced that they are going to input a medical program
on campus sometime ideally in the year of 2017. Washington State University Spokane
has announced their plans to implement a medical program in 2017 to help address the
shortage of primary care physicians in Wash. state. WSU Spokane says that there are
approximately ten doctors for over 10,000 people in Wash. state.
Why should WSU Vancouver students care about something that is not happening
on their campus? WSU Vancouver’s Vice President David Choi, majoring in biology and
minoring in chemistrybiology major, is personally excited for the medical program,
saying, “I think it is amazing!” President Choi said that this is “an opportunity to meet the
needs of the state,” pointing out that the University of Washington is the only university
in the entire state that offers students a M.D. program aside from WWAMI (Washington,
Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho). WWAMI is a regional medical school program that
let’s their students start/complete their medical training within the five 5 states.
Commented [WV1]: This kind of undermines the
article, it makes the med school seems less important.
Please delete after you see this note.
Commented [WV2]: 1-10 are spelled out, it turns
numeric at 11.
Commented [WV3]: We can’t site a website like that,
see changes made below.
Commented [WV4]: AP has specific guidelines on state
names, Washington needs to be abbreviated as Wash.
Commented [WV5]: Please stop putting questions in
the article, the point of the article is to tell them why they
should care, without voicing the question of “why should
we?”
Commented [WV6]: We don’t put their title in the
article with their name every time, you said who he is
once, all that we need is his last name now.

President Choi , as a biology major, said that “if everything was setup and ready
to go,” he would attend the medical program in Spokane rather than at UW, wanting to be
apart of the “new and upcoming” program, setting a standard for future students.
Cindy Morical, an advisement counselor at WSU Vancouver, said that if an
undergraduate is considering of transferring from one WSU campus to another, they
could access the campus transfer form at www.registrar.wsu.edu for more information.
According to the WSU Spokane website, the amount of medical students instatein state at UW has remained a consistent 100 for the past 40 years, despite the states
increase in population. Many community leaders in the Spokane area have lobbied for the
implementation of the medical program in response to these statistics. For more
information, go to spokane.wsu.edu.
Notes:
Ok, I know that my word count is very short, but the reasons as to why is because:
A. I am still waiting for David to send me some information about other students
who have a major that molds well with the Medical school news and would be
open to an interview. I usually would have just gone around and asked random
students myself, but considering the subject matter, I just thought it would have

been easier to see what David had for me. If I don’t have anything/hear from him
soon (Monday or Tuesday), I will just go around and ask random students.
B. I haven’t had a proper interview with my counselor yet about the transfer process.
I did email her, and thought the information/link she gave me would be enough to
suffice (I was wrong. The transfer process from one satellite campus to another
seems rather simple and not a whole lot to it, but I will interview her on that just
in case.) Because of this, I am going to make my main priority to ask her about
the differences between transferring from a satellite campus instead of a
completely different one, in order to get more information and increase my word
count.) She has walk-in hours on Mondays, so I will meet with her then.
Also, I am not exactly sure how I am supposed to properly cite a website for a newspaper
(as you can tell). Do I cite in APA style like I would for a regular school paper, or
something completely different? Please help me out with this one if you can.

Commented [WV9]: Explain that the transfer process is
simple, this should get interest in the program.
Commented [WV10]: See my above note about it.
Commented [WV11]: Off to a good start. You need to
have the last of your info in by our meeting on Friday,
which is when I need to finish up edits on it.
