HOW TO MAKE A STUDY PLAN
I am Arnel C. Andaleon, a licensed teacher, a basketball coach, and an ESL teacher in
the Philippines. I have been a teacher for almost 14 years already and experience lots
of struggles on how to deliver education to my students. In this article, I will tell you how
to make a study plan. These are things that I usually say to my students to help them in
their studies.
Step 1: Know your learning styles as a student.
There are four different learning styles (VARK) by Neil D. Fleming and Coleen E. Mills in
their study in the year 1992. Let us take a closer look at these four learning styles.
1. Visual Learners - this type of learner is best at learning knowledge and concepts
thru the use of images presented to them. You are a visual learner if you always
use a highlighter to remember concepts and words on your notes or books.
2. Auditory Learners - this type of learner always finds success in group activities.
This learner tends to read his work vocally aloud in front of a group.
3. Reading/Writing Learners - this learner has a strong learning preference for
written words. He or she usually takes down notes during the class because he
or she can easily break down information that is needed.
4. Kinesthetic Learners - if you are a hands-on student then definitely you are a
kinesthetic learner. This learner usually excels in skills and lab work classes.
Step 2 - Set your study goals.
Pick simple goals. Your goals must be based on experiences you will gain and not
result-oriented. For example, I will write all notes, I will not be late for all of my classes,
and other goals that are achievable and something you can control.
Break down your goals into simple ones. Here are some examples:

Prepare notebooks for each class.
Attend class regularly.
Participate in actively in-class discussions.
Take exams and practices.
Step 3 - Make a study calendar and review notes regularly.
Making study your daily habits will greatly help you meet your goals. Make a study
calendar using your mobile phone setting it to alarm you if you need to finish deadlines.
Using sticky notes with a list of things you need to do and post it in a place that you
usually look when you wake up and before you go to bed. You can also use the above
mentioned to check your notes regularly.
Step 4 - Create a study corner.
A study corner is a place where you can study free from any distractions. It can be your
room, your living room, or on a sofa. Make sure that you choose a place that is suited to
your personality.
Step 5 - Minimize distractions.
A lot of students are easily distracted by their mobile phones ringing and vibrating.
Turning off your mobile phones and turning off vibrations of your phones is the best way
to decrease your distractions.
Step 6 - Have a good sleep and eat healthy foods.
After you follow the steps, you need to take care of your body. Getting enough sleep
and eating healthy foods will increase your brain activity and energy for your study plan.
Conclusion
Now, are you ready to make your study plan? But before that one last piece of advice.
Studying takes a lot of courage, patience, and diligence. Even if you follow these simple
tips, without courage, patience, and diligence everything will be in vain.
