Cross trade
experience
shipment:
Remote
control
Cross trade shipment is a type of shipment organized between two countries that share the
characteristic that neither of them is the country of the sender. This type of shipment is also
known as third party shipment or triangular shipment.
To give you a graphic image of how this works, think about the following situation. You are
going to move a product to someone in Venezuela, said product is manufactured, and
purchased there, in China but your freight forwarding company is located in the city of Miami.
The challenge then is to organize the shipment efficiently and at a competitive price from
China to Venezuela without passing through Miami. Was I understood?
Below, I present some ideas about cross trade shipping. I will explain what a cross trade is,
why you should use it, how to use it, and what you should keep in mind when deciding to
send using this modality.
What is a cross trade?
As I told you before, a cross trade is a shipment organized between two countries, neither of
which is the country of the shipper. This practice is part of the so-called triangular operations
and eliminates long transit times that make movement more expensive. It is a “remote
control” operation that, although it is a logistical challenge, represents an opening to new
markets.
Why would an importer use cross trade shipments?
There are several reasons why shipping companies use cross trades. All of them are related
to saving money in the long term. Here I present some advantages of cross trade shipping:
1. Lower costs in the supply chain: The supply chain is an area where many costs can be
optimized. Cross trades completely eliminate the need to take goods to the Freight
Forwarder's country and ship them from there. This means eliminating the additional costs of
freight, duties and taxes associated with the initial importation of the product. The additional
expense of reselling the product from the NVOCC country once it has already been imported
is eliminated.
2. Shorter transit time: Is it worth importing from a country if it is half a world away? Of
course it's worth it. Cross trade shipments can reduce transit times. This means greater cost
savings for the company shipping the merchandise.
3. Efficiency in the supply chain: Cross trade shipments bring production and stock closer
to the final destination. The entire supply chain is decentralized. On the other hand,
transportation time is shortened. This results in eliminating the need to ship merchandise
through the NVOCC country. Cross trade shipments then help save transportation time and
improve shipping efficiency.
4. Access to new markets: Cross trades are a great way to enter a new market. Goods can
be obtained from countries that are on the other side of the planet. Geographic location is no
longer a limitation.
5. Use of local agents: If you are an importer, you do not need to find someone abroad to
manage a cross trade for you. You can deal with a local agent in your own area. This agent
will handle the complexities of each country while you maintain a single local service
provider.
Closing ideas
The world has become small. Logistics companies in international trade no longer need to
have physical facilities in the places from where they take, or to where they direct, the
goods. Through logistics allies based on the extreme points, origin and destination, of
shipments, they can offer efficient services to their clients.
In theory, this movement can be done in both directions, import and export. Suppose you are
an NVOCC based in Venezuela…How does the idea of shipping LCL for a client in another
country sound for you? Would you prefer to bring an FCL from China to Venezuela?
Whatever operation you want to perform, would you feel more comfortable using an NVOCC
based on the same location as the final shipment´s consignee? Cross trade shipment gives
you that possibility.
What is the secret to achieving a successful cross trade shipment? The answer is: select
reliable logistics allies Every positive experience starts from there. Now you know it…
