After about a year, I was able
to “see” careers accurately closer to
80-90% of the time. Discussing my
unusual hobby with a stranger in
a bar one day, I was asked “Okay,
smart-ass, so then what am I?” And
I drew a blank.
As children, we are cautioned,
“Don’t judge a book by its cover!”
Why not?! How absurd! Book covers
are lovingly crafted by graphic
designers (FOOTNOTE), with the
intent of signaling what sort of book
it may be. The cover is a major effort
in communication, which it would be
foolish to ignore.
Please don’t interpret this book
as suggesting that any particular
skin colors, gender identities, sexual
preferences, nationalities, or other
major groupings of people, are
somehow more or less qualified to
be
in any line of work. My experience in
this area has suggested that we are
all equally capable - with the
possible
exception that marginalized groups
often work extra-hard and therefore
may have a bit of an edge.

true. We are often wrong. People
deserve to be judged by their
actions, not by their appearances.
And it would be deeply foolish
to draw conclusions based on
someone’s apparent heritage or

the astrological assumptions of
commonality between people born
within the same month, or even on
the same day, is absurd.

“And how do you propose one
can accomplish this feat?”
The man and his friend burst out
in laughter, and he said, “No, you
got it exactly right. I’ve had ten jobs
in ten years, and honestly I’m very
upset about it, but I have absolutely
no idea what I am.”

those were probably occasions
where I overheard people talking
about their work. Many times I felt
humiliated. Some people mistook
my inquiry for a romantic pass. A
few got rather angry, either at my
interruption or at the insult of my
error. I persisted.
“No,” T. answered, “I didn’t say
that I have this ability. I only said
that it’s possible to achieve this level
of awareness. I consider it a goal,
but I didn’t say I’m there yet.” Okay,
my tension eased a bit, but I was still
uncomfortable.
“Judge a Book By Its Cover”
As an adult now many years
after college, I realize the “guessthe-career” game of my early 20s
might be considered pretentious
or self-aggrandizing. However, I
have consistently found that people
underestimate their own ability to
observe.

would move on without attempting

What can you know, just by

One day, T. said to me, “You

Being somewhat more scienceminded, I objected strongly to this

“How long a glance?” I asked, and

“You don’t have to see the full staircase. Just take the first step.”
Healthy food nourishes your body, keeps your immunity up and fuels your busy
days. If your nutrition is off, you might have difficulty concentrating, your memory
might lag and your performance at work might suffer. A healthy diet consists of
a balance of fresh vegetables, fruits, proteins and grains. If you’re an avid social
media user, you may have noticed that social media platforms such as Instagram
and Pinterest are filled with magical-looking ombré smoothies, overflowing
salad and grain bowls and extensive, veggie-filled meal prep spreads. Although
glamorous, these spreads make healthy eating look far more complicated than it
needs to be.
tasks such as keeping you healthy.
Benefits of eating well include:
-increased energy levels
-increased immunity
-diminished unhealthy food cravings
-increased mental clarity and focus
-decreased chances of developing diseases
-increased mood (b vitamins, which are found in
many healthy protein sources such as fish and
eggs, help your body produce serotonin, the
“feel good” chemical)
Can you maintain a healthy diet while
eating out?
Recently, healthy food has become way more accessible, especially in the readyto-eat section of the grocery store and in fast-food environments such as food
courts. This is amazing news for those of us who are too busy to engage in the
ever-so-popular Sunday meal prep.
EATING WELL 101
What is Healthy Food?
Although there is a ton of debate over which foods
are “healthy” your best bet is to eat foods that are as
close as possible to their natural form. These days
there’s an overload of information on what’s healthy
and what’s not, and each new fad diet tries to teach
us something new. For example, we all know the
gluten-free diet has been all the range for quite some
time now. Gluten does have negative side effects
if you’re intolerant or sensitive to it. If you’re not
intolerant or sensitive to gluten you won’t have issues
eating sprouted grain or sourdough bread, especially
if it’s organic and non-GMO. Healthy bread provides
your body with some vital vitamins and minerals,
unlike store-bought white or whole grain bread.
Foods that are labelled “low-fat” or “diet” are typically
filled with added sugars and preservatives and
it’s best to steer clear of these. You’ll always have
success eating well if you stick to eating fruits,
vegetables, healthy fats, lean meats, grains and
legumes while limiting foods that are processed or
foods that contain added sugars. You should aim to
have your main meals consist of 50% vegetables,
25% carbs and 25% protein.
Benefits of Eating Well
Eating a well-balanced diet has endless benefits.
When your body gets an abundance of vitamins and
minerals it’s able to run optimally without working too
hard. This allows your body to focus on important
aren’t prepared in oil, such as dim sum and various
steamed vegetable dishes. Choosing dim sum allows
you to control how much of the various condiments
are used, thus lessening your consumption of
unhealthy fats and steamed vegetables are a filling
but extremely healthy choice!
Another important tip - your best bet for eating out
while being healthy is choosing nutrient-dense, fibrefilled foods. Fiber helps move food through your body
while also reducing your post-meal insulin spikes.
Insulin is a necessary hormone that keeps your
blood sugars stable after meals. Typically if a person
consumes a diet filled with simple carbohydrates
and sugars, the body is constantly having to pump
out insulin to keep blood sugars level, which, after
enough time leads to insulin resistance and then
diabetes. Good examples of foods high in soluble
fibre are oats, whole grains, most vegetables, beans
and lentils. Luckily, these foods are also nutrient
dense, and thus will help you consume a ton of
vitamins and minerals. Most places nowadays have
whole grain options, and it’s fairly easy to get your fix
of vegetables and legumes. It’s become easier than
ever to eat out but still eat well.
Healthy Eating (out) for Kids
You can definitely lose weight without cooking at
home. This may seem groundbreaking but there’s
no secret key to success here - it’s all about making
the right choices, being motivated and educating
yourself. It also helps if you have a plan of attack for
your typical workday meals. Lucky for you, this guide
is armed with all the tips and tricks you need to have
the freedom of eating out without any of the guilt.
The most important thing you can do is to choose
the least processed option available. Functional tip:
If you’re going to your favourite fast food Mexican
restaurant go for a salad or rice bowl, topped with
guacamole and salsa, as opposed to a burrito,
taco, or any number of the other less-than-healthy
choices which are usually topped with extremely
unhealthy fat-filled, sugar-filled dressings. It’s
important to note that you shouldn’t be avoiding all
fats, actually, healthy fats such as avocados and olive
oil are encouraged. Instead, you should be avoiding
overly processed vegetable and seed oils, and only
consuming fatty meats moderately. If you’re going out
for Chinese food your best bet is to order foods that
If you’re a busy parent whose work life leaves little
room for cooking, you may find that eating out is
the most convenient way to get dinner on the table.
Luckily, healthy dining out options aren’t limited to just
adults, and parents can find great relief knowing they
can feed their children well without having to prepare
food themselves. It’s important to feed children
nutritious food and limit their intake of overly process
and sugar filled foods. It’s also important to note that
children have different caloric needs than adults do,
