Chapter One: Search Engine Optimization Basics:
Using Keywords
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Before we discuss keywords we have to understand what Search Engine
Optimization or SEO actually is.
Search Engine Optimization can be complicated but at its core it is just a way to
optimize how often you are found organically through search engine results.
Search Engines are sites that aggregate and showcase data for people. A search
engine has indexed many sites and the purpose of a search engine is to showcase
the best results for any given phrase typed into it.
Search engines are complicated beings, but there are many ways that you can use
SEO to rank higher and show up in more results.
Above all else, search engines want to provide relevant results to users. When
someone types a question or a phrase into Google and they get a relevant result,
they are more likely to keep coming back to Google to ask any question or look up
anything they want to know more about.
Why Should You Care About Ranking In Search Engines?
Search engines are AMAZING. In today's information overloaded world, people
trust search engines to provide them with the best knowledge about basically any
topic they can think of. If you can get Google to be your best friend for any
significant length of time, you have a best friend that will get you consistent
targeted traffic to your site.
Honestly, you don't even have to be ranking for huge keywords. If you can rank
high enough for some good keywords in your niche, you can create an awesome
steady stream of traffic for yourself.
For example, I started using SEO on my blog The Happy Arkansan heavily this year. I
am just using basic techniques and using Google Webmaster Tools/Google Search
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 6
Console (which I will be teaching you more about next week) and I have already
seen a significant increase in traffic from Google which has in turn also helped me
grow my email list. You don't want to put all your traffic eggs in one basket so using
SEO in tandem with Pinterest can really help grow your traffic and email list.
It is just June and I have already received more page views from Google this year
than I received all of last year from Google on The Happy Arkansan. If you can
consistently get more traffic from a source, your goal should be to hop on that
source and make sure that you are using it properly.
What is a Keyword?
A keyword is a word or phrase that you share throughout your blog post, sales
page, commerce site, etc that search engines can use to find your content. You can
use a keyword throughout your article to get a search engine's attention and then
users will type those keywords into Google, Bing, or whatever search engine they
use to find your content.
So when a Google user types in "Fidget spinner tricks" then Google will be able to
show them a variety of relevant sites, videos, or pictures with fidget spinner tricks.
But How Does Google Know?
Google learns. Google is able to access a lot of information like page and video
views, time on site, social shares, backlinks, and SO much more to be able to make
sure that your content is relevant to Google users. Once may also see that your
content isn't as relevant by users skipping over your results and not clicking or
when users exit your site quickly. Google is constantly updating its algorithm and
search ranking to make sure that each time someone visits their site to search for
something--they get the result they want.
How Smart is Google?
Google is pretty darn smart. Some people think that Google isn't smart because it's
not a human, but Google knows it's stuff, y'all. For instance, I have ranked for many
things and some of the results around my information isn't as clear as you might
think. For example, one thing I rank for on The Happy Arkansan is the phrase "how
to write a kickass introduction"
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 7
Why is it crazy that I rank for this? Well, one, my article title is actually called "How
To Write A Kick Ass Introductory Paragraph" not "How To Write A Kickass
Introduction." Google was able to pull various statements from my article where I
did explicitly say "introduction" and understand that all the various ways I say
Introductory like intro and introduction all mean the same thing which helped me
rank for this.
Now let's look further down these results. The second result is titled "How to write
a kickass essay with 1/2 the stress." That has nothing to do with writing an
introduction paragraph, explicitly, but it will be touched on because part of writing
an essay is writing an introduction paragraph. This person mentioned the word
"introduce" which is another word that Google was able to associate with
"introduction." Good job, Google!
Now for the third result, this person's whole result is just a .PDF. Google was able to
read this .PDF and pull the words "how to write a kickass introduction" from the
.PDF. Obviously, Google understands that this .PDF could be potentially relevant to
readers even though the title of this .PDF is "Writing Effective Introductory
Paragraphs and Thesis Statements."
Don't sleep on Google's knowledge and be left behind y'all.
What Is A Long-Tail Keyword?
A long-tail keyword is essentially a phrase that you are trying to rank for. Why
would you want to rank for a phrase? Simple, people ask Google a question, they
don't ask Google about a topic. Generally the only time that I will ask Google
about a topic is if I am doing some research or finding content to share on social
media. When I am really being genuine and asking Google about something I need
help with I am descriptive and I take my time to ask the right question or statement
to Google.
Think about it. Say you are buying a notebook. You know the kind of notebook you
want to purchase or you have some details about the notebook that you are trying
to purchase. Which phrase are you more likely to type into Google?
Notebook
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 8
or
Purple Five-Subject Notebook
More than likely you are trying to cut out the fluff. You don't want to see every
notebook known to man. Instead you only want Google to show you the notebook
if it is purple and has five-subjects. I mean, look at the difference in quality for your
results.
When you look up the keyword notebook you get a ton of irrelevant results. There
are results for Google Notebook, the movie The Notebook, computer notebooks,
and a couple of results for some notebook companies like Moleskin which is kind of
helpful, but still not very helpful.
When you are specific with your purple five-subject notebook search you get
TONS of relevant results. You even get some great shopping links from various
places that will make getting your purple five-subject notebook a literal breeze.
When it comes to ranking for keywords you want your products and blogs to be
found in the breeze category. You want to rank for many long-tail keywords so you
can make sure that the people who are searching for those things are more
invested. If someone is searching for a purple five-subject notebook they are
probably ready to buy, unless of course they are looking it up for a blog post on
keywords.
Doing Keyword Research
When writing your articles you should try to use the best keywords for your article.
Lucky for you, Google provides an awesome tool for those who want to do keyword
research. You can access that tool by c licking here.
Now, Google Keyword Planner is meant to get you hooked on purchasing Google
AdWords ads, b
ut you don't have to do that! Before you start even considering
doing a Google AdWords ad, I need you to not. Instead, I want you to start taking
SEO seriously. You can do so much with SEO just by utilizing Google Search Console
(which we will chat about next week, yay!) and Google Keyword Planner (which we
are chatting about now.)
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 9
How do you do that? Well. Let's delve deeper into using our keyword planning tool.
I am going to share some of the terms you will see when you are logged on to
Google Keyword Planner
Average Monthly Searches
This is the average times per month someone is looking for the term or phrase you
are trying to rank for. You want this to be a healthy number. It doesn't have to be in
the millions, but you want something that people are actually searching for. If you
rank for a term and no one is actually searching for that term, ranking for it won't
matter.
Competition
Competition is used mostly for advertisers, but this can be an important thing for
you to understand even if you don't plan to start a Google AdWords campaign.
Why? Advertisers are smart as hell, y'all. They calculate these things and they are
trying to get the best return on investment for their companies and blogs. If a term
or phrase has high competition, it means that advertisers have seen a return on
their investment. Advertisers aren't going to stay with a term or phrase if it isn't
getting them the results they want.
On the other hand, if a term or phrase is highly competitive it also means that you
are going to have a difficult time ranking for that term or phrase. This isn't meant to
turn you off, it's meant to encourage you (but only to a degree.) Don't spend SO
much of your time chasing keywords that are highly competitive that you miss out
on some of those low and medium competition keywords. Having a keyword with
low competition or medium competition doesn't necessarily mean that you
shouldn't go after it. Those keywords may not yield the most traffic, but you want a
portfolio of various terms that you rank for.
Think of your keywords as a pyramid. You want your base to be filled with many of
those easy to rank for keywords that are going to give you some good traffic each
month. If you can rank #1 or even on the front page for many of those keywords
that will rake in some great traffic in for your blog. Then you want to think of some
more medium competition keywords. Go after those keywords so that you can get
more traffic and rank for more prestigious keywords. Lastly try hard to rank for a
few high competition keywords as those are getting people a ton of results.
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 10
Where Do You Add Keywords
So now that you have some keywords to use, where do you put them? There are
many places that you should add your keywords too:
In Your URL
Obviously, if you want to rank for something, it should be a part of your blog post's
URL. You should be able to easily change the URL for any post you make so that
you can add the URL you actually want and add a URL that is better for SEO. Try to
be a succinct as possible when creating your URL so that Google can focus on the
keywords you want to rank for.
In Your Blog Title
Your title is another great place to add your keyword. While it's not mandatory,
adding your keyword toward the front of your blog title is best.
In Your Blog Headers
If you are not using headers and subheaders for your blog, you should start this
process today. Headers are great because they help you break up your text, and
also because they are great for SEO. You have seen headers and subheaders
throughout my article with the blue, pink, and red words.
Throughout Your Blog Posts
You also want to share your keywords multiple times throughout your article. When
you do this you allow Google to understand that you are serious about the topic at
hand. If you just talk about a topic once or twice, Google may pick it up, but the
clearer you are about this being a main point, the clearer it will be for Google to
rank your blog.
Obviously you don't want to create something crazy here so don't start keyword
stuffing, but it's good to share some great keywords throughout your post so that
Google understands what your article is about.
In Image File Names & Image Captions
Images are a highly underutilized way to boost your SEO. You need to start taking
them seriously though because Google also indexes images on your blog. You want
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 11
to make sure that you take the time to add captions, add alt-tags, and add file
names for your images. Optimize every aspect of your blog.

Chapter Two: How To Submit Your Site To Search
Engines
Stop, Amanda, W hy Should I Submit My Site To Search
Engines?
Simple, to speed along the SEO process. Google and other sites will get to your
site--eventually. If you don't have to wait, why wait? Instead, take matters into your
own hands and go through the simple process of submitting your site to search
engines yourself.
By submitting your site and speeding along the process you can begin to see results
from search engines faster than you ever would just focusing on your keywords.
Taking this extra step will help you secure better search engine optimization right
now instead of waiting for Google to do it on their own.
This is great if you are a smaller site or you don't have a big social media and
backlinks presence. We will talk about how to grow that presence next week, but
this week let's focus on getting you submitted to search engines.
What Does Submitting Your Site Even Do?
So essentially you are giving Google (or whatever site you submit to) the keys to
indexing your entire site by showing them exactly where your sitemap is located
and sharing with them the full treasure trove of content that you have. Obviously
the more content you have, the better, but you don't have to have hundreds of
pages of content for this to be beneficial.
Google will be indexing every page on your site that you give it access to. Obviously
it won't be indexing any nofollow pages, but everything else is fair game. Google is
also indexing site images (which is why I told you last week to give your images the
keyword treatment too.)
It may take a while for Google to process everything that you submit, but in the
weeks after you submit you should see that indexing is complete (or as close to
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 13
complete as it can get.) Some pages that you submit to Google may not be as
indexable as you would like or have errors when Google is indexing those page so
they won't be indexed.
If you want to stand out to search engines you need to be blogging
For any businesses or people who don't post on their site a lot--start blogging.
Blogging truly does help you when it comes to SEO because blogs are very valuable
and actionable. Obviously you don't want to post just to post, but it is very
beneficial to consider blogging often. If you cannot blog on your own--hire out the
blogging process. (I am a freelance for hire if you would like to chat, c heck out my
hire me page!) If you are comfortable writing, try to write at least once or twice a
week until you have built up a nice amount of content on your blog. After you have
built up a nice backlog of content, keep capitalizing on that content.
Here are some ideas on how to write more blog content when you aren't a blogger.
These are niche examples, so if you want some some help with this, be sure to
comment down below or contact me!
If you run a boutique:
● Gather customer photos, send them a quick interview question or two about
their style and why they loved the outfit, share a few of those in a blog post
and be sure to link the products and the social media handles for your
customers.
● Create some in-house photo shoots for outfit of the day pictures and be sure
to tell a cohesive story around what the outfit would be perfect for while also
linking your products.
If you run a podcast/video blog:
● Create show notes for your podcast/video blog and share a synopsis of your
post while linking to any tools that you share in the podcast/video blog.
● Get your podcast or video blog transcribed and share the cleaned up
transcription as your blog content with the podcast/video blog at the top.
This is great for anyone who is cannot hear and will be an easy way to create
content around your podcast or vlog if you can find a good transcription
service.
If you run a gym:
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 14
● Share a blog featuring some easy workout routines. Be sure that these will
be things that people can accomplish at your gym as well as at home while
you showcase your gym membership.
● Share a blog showcasing people who attend your gym often with their
testimonials and fitness journeys.
Again, these are very niche examples that will only apply to you if you are in these
industries, but thinking outside the box to produce blog content will really help you
when it comes to search engine optimization. People don't crave sales pages, but
they crave and share blog content.
Blog content is also helpful because it gives the search engines more pages to
index. Google can rank your sales page, but if you have a blog you have a bigger
chance of someone clicking that blog and then deciding to opt-in for something else
or purchasing something else after they see your juicy blog content. You are sort of
pigeonholed when it comes to creating sales pages. You can't focus on too many
products. On the other hand, you can create a ton of blogs each month and you
can rank for all of them.
Enough Small Talk, Let's Submit Our Site To Search Engines
Okay, we may not have a million blog posts yet, but we are ready to add our site to
search engines so we can start getting some traffic from Google. Once your site is
up and verified Google will pull stuff from your site often so you don't have to worry
about not having everything ready to go just yet.
Where Do You Go To Submit Your Site?
This tutorial will focus mostly on Google but you can also submit your site to Yahoo
and Bing's search engines which I encourage you to do just in case. It's very simple
and you can more than likely knock both out in one good afternoon of work.
● Submit your site to Google using G
oogle Search Console
● Submit your site to Yahoo/Bing using B
ing Webmaster Tools
What Do You Need To Submit Your Site?
The main process of submitting your site is pretty easy. You need to sign up for an
account with Google and Microsoft (which Bing is a part of) or use an existing
Google/Microsoft account.
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 15
Then after you sign up you will start the process of getting your site submitted.
They will more than likely ask you to verify that you are the owner of the website
you are submitting and this is done through adding some code or text to your
website for them to verify your ownership.
Then you will move into the site addition process in which you will need to find your
blog site map. A sitemap is just a condensed XML page that showcases all of your
blog posts in a simple to read format for the search engine to digest. This is their
roadmap to understanding what is on your site so they can add your content to
their search engines.
● How To Find Your Sitemap Using Squarespace
● How To Find Your Sitemap Using Wordpress
Once you find your sitemap it is really as easy as submitting it quickly to Google
Search Console and letting it do the rest. You can't rush the steps it takes
unfortunately--you just gotta trust in your keyword research and wait on Google to
work it's magic.
So as you can see on Google Search Console I went to Crawl-->Site Maps and then
you can click the button in the corner to "Add/Test" Sitemap. Your sitemap should
be an extension of the URL that you have already submitted so you only have to
add the part behind your base URL.
For more information check out this article from Google titled B
uild and Submit a
Sitemap.
How To Test That Your Site Is Submitted
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 16
After a while you should be able to go to your sitemaps section and see a blue bar
for submitted and a red bar for indexed. This is a good indication that it is indexed.
If you want to double check go to Google and enter the words site:yoururl.com
(obviously replacing yoururl with your url.) Once you do that you should be able to
easily see content from your site on Google. The above image is just the top of my
search results when I type this phrase into Google for my blog.
Now, Let's Chat More About Google Search Console
Google Search Console does SO much more than just allow you to submit your site.
There are many tools embedded in Google Search Console that I love to use. I am
going to walk you through some of my favorite parts and how I use them to grow
my blog:
Search Analytics
On the other side of this image you can see the top 15 results for The Happy
Arkansan at the moment. Obviously, I get quite a few clicks from sorority related
stuff over there, but this tool is so helpful because it makes me realize what is really
working for my blog when it comes to SEO.
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 17
My top 15 are pretty great because I can associate each search result in my top 15
with a blog post on my site.
When I move further down the list this isn't
always the case so I challenge you to look at
your search analytics after they start rolling
in and looking for those opportunities.
Google is constantly learning so it may rank
you for a keyword that doesn't quite fit your
blog so people may see you in the search
even though the keyword is a bit off. I like to
scroll through the list every blue moon to
get ideas if the search keyword doesn't
match any content that I have on my blog.
This is subjective because even though I feel
it doesn't match, Google and the reader
could still think it does.
If you find a bunch of those words in your
search analytics consider adding a post or
two with that keyword in mind in the near
future. Sometimes these words are all over
the place and not as helpful, but sometimes
you get a real gem and you are able to grow
with that and create content around that
word or phrase.
From this you can also click on those little
arrows and open up another window that
showcases the search results for that
keyword. When you are there you can click through and see how you are ranking
on that keyword. You can also scope out the competition to see what they are
doing to rank so high for the keyword if you like that keyword. Then once you know
why they are ranking so high you can figure out how you can take the lessons
learned from their post and add to your post.
Links To Your Site
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 18
Another great section on Google Search Console is the Links To Your Site section. It
allows you to see all the times that your site as a whole or pages of your site have
been mentioned by other bloggers and websites and this is GREAT for blogger
outreach.
I really suggest that you comb through this every few weeks and look for new links
that you haven't seen before. You are able to quickly go to the actual site your
content is linked on. Take a few minutes to read their post or resource and then
leave a thoughtful comment to thank them for mentioning your blog and sharing
your content.
Often people will share their content and the last thing on their minds is to contact
the person they linked. I know that I link a TON of people without reaching out and
letting them know. This is a great way to build relationships with people who
already love your content because they shared it on their blogs and websites.
Miscellaneous Tools
Google Search Console also offers many miscellaneous tools to help you grow your
SEO. It really is like the control center of all things SEO because it allows you to see
what's performing and what is not performing.
This tool has an entire section dedicated to Search Appearance which is great
because it helps you determine how you could be seen more in search results by
tweaking things and adding Structured Data. I am still a newbie at this part of SEO
but that is a big task I want to accomplish in the next few months so that I can have
more detailed results when I show up on search engines.
Google Search Console features a section dedicated to security issues as well which
can be really helpful because it will let you know if it has seen any security issues
which is a great feature to have on your side!
There are also many Google Index features which gives you the opportunity to
remove URLs, see your index status, and figure out what blocked URLs you have on
your site and figure out why exactly they are blocked which is quite helpful for you
if you are trying to maximize SEO payoff.
Go check out all the things Google Search Console can do.

Chapter 3: How To Properly Use Backlinks And
Social Media For SEO Growth
What Value Do You Bring To The Table?
Before we chat about backlinks and social media shares we need to talk about
value. What value do you bring to the table with your blog? Hopefully the answer is
a ton of value. People share things that are valuable to them. This doesn't
necessarily mean just educational value, but educational value is probably one of
the easiest things to obtain as a blogger.
People don't just link to anything or share anything on social media. They usually
share when something speaks to them so you have to make sure your content does
just that. If you spend any length of time on my blog you know that I love being a
generous content creator. I share that message in everything that I publish online
because I feel that it is that important.
Your content needs to be actionable, easy to follow, and you need to niche down
your blog's focus and get acquainted with your ideal audience in order to do that.
Once you are able to do those things you can really make an impact on your
readers and start getting more social and backlink love to your website.
How To Build Backlinks For Your Blog
Building high quality backlinks is so important. There are many ways to build those
backlinks for your blog. Here are a couple of the easiest ways to gain those
backlinks:
1. Guest Posting
Guest posting is one of the ways most commonly associated with gaining backlinks.
This isn't the easiest method, but it comes with a host of other great things:
● Increased relationship with people in your industry
● Great access to other people's audiences
● Increased page views and email list sign-ups
When deciding who you would like to guest post for I would take a couple of things
into consideration:
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 20
Their Niche
The paramount concern that you should have when deciding where to guest post is
the site's niche. If the niche doesn't mesh with your niche, why would you even
bother guest posting? There are many easier ways to build backlinks than writing
for a site that's not in your niche. Sharing your favorite cheese dip recipe on a food
blog won't help your social media posts on your social media advice blog. Be clear
about who you would like to write for and make sure that they post about similar
topics so you can take advantage of all the added benefits of guest posting. If you
are building a freelance portfolio, guest posting out of your niche may be
acceptable, but that is the only time that I could see it as beneficial.
Their SEO
This may seem like something that you have to fight to get, but SEO is pretty open.
Moz has a great Google Chrome extension that you can add which allows you to
find some great information about any site that you happen to be on while using it.
et the MozBar (and thanks to E
den Fried who introduced me to this
tool when I attended one of her webinars. Check out her blog she provides tons of
great information!)
Their Engagement and Social Following
You should also consider their engagement and social following. Some people say
that you should just base this off their social following but I feel you need a mixture.
This does not mean that you pass over the small blogger, in fact guest posting for
someone who has a similar or even smaller following can be beneficial if they have
great engagement. That is why I think you should look at both metrics before you
decide to work with them.
Their Writing Style
You want someone who has a similar writing style to you. If they have a more
flowery and poetic writing style and your writing style is like a slap in the face--you
won't work well with their audience. Even if you write about similar topics that style
won't mesh. If you toned down your writing for their site y ou can't fake it all the time
so when they happen to check out your site they will be dazed and confused.
Instead, focus on guest posting for sites that have a similar writing style so you
don't have to tame yourself or make yourself a different writer in any way, shape,
or form.
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 21
Guest posting can be really beneficial to you as a writer. Yes, guest posting is giving
away some of your best content, and it is also a slow build for your link building
strategy. On the other hand, this creates a closer bond for you. It's about more than
just getting a link--it's building a relationship with new people which can prove so
much more valuable than a link on someone's blog post.
That being said, you may want some of those links that are easier to obtain so here
comes #2...
2. Emailing Influencers
Another great idea for building backlinks is to email influencers with your new post.
Find influencers who have published about similar things on their blog. You can use
the same things we talked about a few paragraphs back like using the MozBar to
understand their SEO influence and observing their social media following and
engagement. Once you have chosen the influencers:
You need to act like you give a damn.
I am going to be frank here, because this situation is dire. I get requests to look at
people's content all the time on The Happy Arkansan but I hardly ever add their
links because it seems like they don't truly care. If you want influencers to listen to
your case you have to at least act like this is more than just a scheme to build your
backlinks. If having your link on my blog is seen as influential--I want you to care
about getting that link.
I am not asking you to kiss the ground I walk on, but you know, act like you actually
want to form a relationship instead of just treating me as one more backlink on
your mountain of links. Here is how you do that:
Address the influencer by their name | This is already an easy way to build
links--you s hould not be sending the same pitch email to each influencer your
email. Bloggers usually have their name prominently displayed on their blog so use
that. Double check before you send any email just in case you pulled the wrong
name.
Show that you have at least read the blog post | If you have read more than
that, that's amazing, but at least act like you have read the post at hand. Comment
on something specific about the post, it doesn't have to be long-winded (influencers
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 22
have places to be) but a comment or two about why you like the post is always
appreciated.
Be specific | I shouldn't have to dig for the post in question. Many influencers have
100s and sometimes 1000s of posts. Share a link (or at the very least a title) to the
post you are talking about so I know where to insert your link.
Don't act entitled | One of the biggest turn offs for me, "I see you have linked to
XYZ's post and our post would be a great addition too." I am sorry, but just because
I found that post helpful doesn't mean I will like yours. Don't mention who else I've
linked to, quite frankly in my opinion, it's none of your business.
There are MANY more ways to earn backlinks for your website. This list from
Entrepreneur that shares 1
0 Smart Ways To Earn Or Build Backlinks To Your
Website is really great. I am really partial to the writing testimonials and getting
interviewed methods they share. Lastly, another great way is by signing up for the
Help A Reporter Out newsletter. This newsletter comes to your inbox 3x a day
Monday-Friday and has plenty of opportunity to help out reporters and get
potential links back to your site.
How To Build A Social Media Following Around Your Blog
Social media is a great way to uplevel your SEO. The bottom line is G
oogle looks at
your social media influence to validate your authority. It's easy to get backlinks
galore from websites through emailing influencers, guest posting, or doing all of
those backlinks techniques--but you need validation from a source that is harder to
fake--social media. It's hard and discouraged to create dozens of Twitter accounts
just to get more retweets on your blog's tweet. Google sees this as a good thing and
they really take into consideration all of your social media love.
If you want to learn more information about t he relationship between social media
and SEO check out this post by Hootsuite. Now, let's chat about how to get more
social media love on your blog.
Believe in The Power Of The Social Share Bar
When I created a post a few months ago about i ncreasing blog shares one thing I
hammered home is adding a social share bar to your blog. Most Squarespace
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 23
themes come with a share button at the bottom but it's teeny tiny and easily
glossed over. A social share bar allows you to put social sharing at the forefront of
your brand--plus once those huge social share numbers start rolling in--who
wouldn't want to be a part of that? When you are able to put your numbers out
there it gets people excited to help you add to that number with their social share.
Put The Social Back In Social Media
It's so easy to forget to be social in a world of social media apps like Buffer and
SmarterQueue that make it incredibly easy to schedule all your content and forget
about its existence. You cannot do that though. You need to be more than willing to
write your own social media content from time to time.
Add A Few 15 Minute Blocks Into Your Schedule
If you would rather schedule a lot of your content--do something simple for me.
Create 2-3 15 minute blocks throughout your day and a rotating schedule of the
social media sites you want to focus on. When your 15 minute block comes
up--create content for your various social media channels during that time.
Create a block in the morning, afternoon, and in the evening. During that time--get
social with your social media accounts. Spend your time commenting on content
and liking or favoriting content. Throw in some retweets too during your Twitter
blocks. Focus on one social media for the block and mix it up so you are not using
the same social media account each time.
Above all else, during this time, be genuine. Don't leave a comment just to leave a
comment. L eave something insightful, add to the conversation, be human.
Encourage More Shares
When someone shares your blogs work on social media encourage that share.
Interact with their share by thanking them and retweeting them or liking/favoriting
their social media update. This is an easy way to show your appreciation and get
people excited to share your content more. Once you show that appreciation for
them they will be more likely to share your content again and again.
Be sure to search for your URL on social media. For example on Twitter I have a
saved search for amandacrossblog.com and every few days I go there and I look for
social media shares on my content. People don't always tag you when they share
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 24
your work so l ook for the shares--don't expect them to land in your notifications
feed.
Keep Up With Your Backlinks
Now that you know how to build backlinks and use your social media to your
advantage--keep up with all those backlinks and social media shares you have
received. This is great because it will likely cause even more reciprocation if you
decide to follow up and return the favor by including their content on your website
or sharing their content on your social media feed. Reciprocation can create a
beautiful internet friendship.
In Chapter 2 I discussed how to use Google Search Console so be sure to use that
coupled with searching on social media sites for your blog URL and looking in your
social media mentions for all the people who have shared your content. Start
sharing the love on your blog where you see fit or reaching out to them for
collaboration on something in the future if you feel that it would be beneficial for
them.

Chapter Four: How To Write A Post For SEO While
Being Human
Humans First, Let The Search Engine Catch Up Later
You need to write for your human friends first. We have talked about this at length,
so if you saw my post about keywords you would know how smart search engines
are. Once it sees real people commenting, visiting, and loving on your content it will
know to place importance on your content.
You obviously care about search engines, but you can't give all your energy to
worrying about ranking in the search engine. A big part of your energy needs to be
spent on making sure that your content is readable and valuable for your readers.
Search engines don't take too kindly to things like keyword stuffing, small
uninformative content, etc. So your best bet is to write the best content that will
impress the most people and let their love of your content drive your SEO growth.
Be Valuable
Last week I asked you a very simple question: What value do you bring to the table?
Hopefully you were able to answer that question with ease because you bring a lot
of value to the table. People and search engines need to see the value in your site
and a lot of that comes from the length of your content and how people engage
with that content.
I am a huge fan of giving y'all everything I have. Recently when chatting with
someone for a freelancing gig I told them exactly that. My style is generous. That's
why my tagline is Generous Freelancing For The Millennial Soul.
In my eyes, you have spent your time on my blog after finding it however you did, I
want to leave everything on the table for you. I want to give as much of my
knowledge to you as I can adequately put into words. This is not the strategy that
everyone chooses to take, but it's my strategy, and I hope that is one of the reasons
you love my blog so much.
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 26
Do your Keyword Research
During the very first chapter we chatted all about keyword research and how to do
this research for your blog. Keyword research is very important because it
combines two elements--figuring out the kind of content that would work well for
search engines as well as people. With those great keywords you will be seen more
in search engines and help the people who are looking for the content around
those keywords.
I am not going to give you another lecture on keyword research because chapter 1
is on this topic, but I just wanted to let you know that keywords are very important
to writing a great blog post that gets you noticed by search engines and people.
Create Content Series/Categories (& Interlink Them All)
Next we are going to chat about creating series and categories. Google wants
people who have authority on a topic. You showcase your authority by creating a
large amount of content about a topic on your site. The best way to do this is to
create a series around that topic or a blog category around that topic.
How To Create A Content Series
Creating a content series is simple and easy--it just takes a bit of planning on your
part. Creating that series about SEO, Pinterest, or whatever topic that you talk
about will help you create authority so you want to make sure that your content is
well planned out.
Creating a series is awesome, though, because it helps you get and stay in a certain
mindset. Knowing that for the entire month of June I would be chatting about SEO
helped me stay in the SEO mindset. Basically all the content I was consuming while
writing these posts was SEO related and I was surrounding myself in SEO content.
It also helped me write all of my content faster and I was done writing content by
June 10th. I was scheduled three weeks out which felt amazing. Series are great
because they thrive when you plan in advance which makes you more likely to get
stuff done. When you create a series you have a roadmap to follow, which takes the
guesswork out of your day to day blogging life, if planned correctly.

Why You Should Interlink Your Content
Whether or not you decide to create your series you still need to be interlinking
your content. Interlinking is so helpful for any blog because:
It Keeps People On Your Site Longer
Once people realize that you have other great content about the same topic--they
want to click over to that other content. Creating those links for people gives them a
reason to fall in love with your blog because they know that your content is great.
You want to show people a lot of content on their first visit because it can
potentially spiral into return visits. So, if someone has a great time with their first
visit, there will likely be a second and third visit.
It Creates Internal Links
Google looks at a lot of things when it determines your blog's worth for SEO ranking
and part of that is internal linking. Internal links really help to showcase how your
blog is structured and creating those internal links will help Google understand a lot
about your site and the kind of content that you create.

Content Marketing SEO by Kissmetrics
A Tip On Interlinking
Create a spreadsheet or document with all the titles and blog URLs for the content
on your site. Take a few minutes while you are creating content to interlink content.
Creating this spreadsheet is so helpful because it helps you get familiar with the
content that you have produced. Sometimes we produce amazing content on
autopilot and we forget that we have even created the amazing content that we
have. I currently use a document because it's easy to add my latest article to the top
of the content pile.
Speed Up Your Site & Make It Pretty
Google looks at a lot of elements to your site and two of those things are site speed
and time on your site. So, therefore, you want to speed up your site and make sure
that it's not a giant eye sore. Not trying to be rude here, but people like pretty and
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 28
fast sites. We are in a world of GO GO GO so you need to make sure that your
website does the same.
Google is amazing and they even have an easy t ool that you can use to test your
page speed for your blog. The test is performed on desktop and mobile which is so
helpful because so many people use mobile now to look at blog content. Once you
enter your URL it only takes a few seconds for the test to run and give you your
blog's results and some ideas on how to optimize your blog's page speed.
Now for design, keep it simple y'all. Make sure that your font is easy to read, make
sure your background is easy to see on (I suggest a white background and black
main text personally.) If you are like me and you have a pretty colorful brand, you
can add that to your brand in other ways (like with buttons, graphics, headers and
subheaders, etc.) You want the bulk of your site to be easily readable so that you
can attract your ideal audience.
Be Yourself
Last, but certainly not least, be yourself. People are attracted to your personality.
People want to get to know the real you. If you are stuck in this mindset that you
have to be like everyone else, you won't get anywhere in the blogging game, and
you won't appeal to humans. If you spend your whole life trying to be like other
people--what good will that do for you? What good would that do for your readers
who depend on you to be you. If I fall in love with you as a creative, I don't want
the watered down version of someone else.
Being yourself is easier said than done though, especially as a creative. We cling to
these online communities because more than likely we don't have people like this
in our lives. Get back in tune with yourself, even if you have to do that at the end of
every single day. Do things that you love and talk like you like to talk. It's like zeroing
yourself out every single day.
Before you perform any activity with a scale it's important to make sure that it is
zeroed out. The scale has had all of these outside influences impacting it and you
don't know exactly what has happened to it. As a precaution you take the time to
get that scale back to zero and get it centered in performing its task again. After
your zero out a scale you can use it like normal.
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 29
Take that time to zero yourself out. You have been impacted by interacting with
people in your niche and people in the Facebook groups you love. This is great, but
it can cause you to be off-centered in what makes you unique. So discover that
again every day and you will be golden.
This is important to SEO because people come back to your site, share your
content, and engage with your content when they know that it is coming from a
genuine and authentic place. The best way to win your readers trust is to be
unapologetically you. Whether you are generous, blunt, hyperactive, etc. people
want you!

Why SEO Is So Important
After reading this book, I hope that you understand why search engine optimization
is so important, but I want to drive home a couple of points that I discussed
throughout the book and wrap this book up.
Search engine traffic is amazing traffic.
1. Multiple Traffic Streams Creates More Stability
It’s so easy to put all of your eggs in one basket in the online world, but you should
never do that when it comes to traffic. You need to have a number of different
strategies for gaining traffic such as search engines, Pinterest, social media sites like
Facebook & Twitter, referrals from other blogs, emails, and more.
A healthy traffic strategy includes a number of different streams for your blog. You
never know when something will happen to one strategy so it’s important to take
the time to learn as many strategies as possible.
2. Search Engine Traffic Is Pretty Hot
Depending on the types of pages you are ranking for, search engine traffic can be
pretty hot. No, not Channing Tatum hot, hot as in ready to purchase. People use
search engines to learn things, purchase items, and make informed decisions on
topics be it which fidget spinner to purchase or which course to enroll in.
When you can get traffic from search engines, you have people coming on your site
who are excited to get as much information as possible from you. This is great for
you as a content creator. Other traffic streams may not create the type of hot leads
and traffic that search engines can create so it’s important to understand how
search engines can impact the quality of your traffic.
Learn more about cold, warm, and hot traffic via this article by Single Grain.
3. It Gets You In Front Of New Eyes
Obviously, the most important thing with any traffic strategy is that it gets you in
front of new eyes. People who find you on search engines may not have ever
The Ultimate Guide To SEO | 34
known you existed until this very moment. Take advantage of that by working on
perfecting your search engine ranking.
Conclusion
Thank you SO MUCH for downloading this book and reading the information
provided within it. I hope that this book gives you TONS of information that will
help you skyrocket your SEO efforts.
Take the time to analyze each chapter and work hard to implement the strategies
provided within this book. The next few pages will be strictly for notes so feel free
