But imagine if a tragedy suddenly happens in this wonderful time of the year? That is what happened to George and Jennie Sodder's family way back year 1945, on the night before Christmas. A fire broke out at around one in the morning in Fayetteville, West Virginia and the house of Sodder's was one of the houses devoured by the fire. What is most painful here is five of their nine kids didn't make it. According to The Smithsonian an institution who analyzed the vertebrae found on the place, after George and Jennie escaped together with their four kids George attempted to save the five remaining kids named Maurice, Martha, Louis, Jennie, and Betty, but it seems that luck isn't on their side that night. Eight in the morning when the Firefighter arrived declaring that it was an electrical fire. The coroner's office then issued five death certificates attributed to fire or suffocation. But George and Jennie were unconvinced that their children are already dead since pieces of evidence are nowhere to be found. So they immediately put up a billboard along Route 16. A crematorium employee also confirmed to the Sodder that there should be bone remains on the incident because the bone sticks even when bodies are burned at 2,000 degrees for two hours. Things got weirder when Sodders remembered a couple of strangers who just appeared at their house simultaneously a few months ago. The first stranger was looking for a job while the other sells insurance. The weird thing is both men said that their house will be going to be on fire someday and their children will be in great danger. The man who sells insurance also said, "You are going to be paid for the dirty remarks you have been making about Mussolini" At the same time, Jennie remembered that minute before the fire happened there is a female stranger who called them, but the only thing Jennie heard is laughter and clinking glasses. George Sodder used this to look for justice on their five lost children, but the Italian dictator didn't take the man's statement as a serious threat. What made the Sodder remained unconvinced are the reports that their children are still alive and seen in different places. So the Sodder did every possible way to find them. They tried to reach out to the FBI, but the FBI had turned them down. The Sodder has a feeling that something wrong is happening and the only way to find the truth is to hire a private investigator. Upon investigating they found out that the man who used to sell insurance is a member of the coroner’s jury who is also the same person who proclaimed that the fire accident is because of damaged electrical wiring. The Sodders was very certain that their children are still alive. They did everything to know what happened to their children, so they searched once again in their house, and finally, they found vertebrae which they sent to the Smithsonian institution for analysis. According to the Pathologists who studied the bones, it has not been exposed to fire and it belongs to only one person. Sodders then doubled the reward to $10,000 to anyone who can give them information, but nothing happened just numerous calls and claims. Twenty years have passed before Jennie got a letter with a photo of a grown-up man who has a resemblance to his nine-year-old son Louis and a cryptic note: "Louis Sodder I love brother Frankie. Ilil [sic] Boys. A9-132 or 35." George and Jennie's hope returned as they receive the letter, so they sent a detective to Kentucky, but the boy already disappeared. Once again they added a photo of the grownup boy on the billboard, but maybe it is destined that they will never succeed to find their children. Due to repeated failures on finding the truth, the Sodders then said to an interview that they only want to know if their children died in the fire so that they will be convinced. Otherwise, just let them know what happened to their precious children. Both George and Jennie Sodder died remained unconvinced and didn’t get the justice they want for their five children. And even their last surviving daughter is also not convinced that her siblings died from the fire. It may be impossible to happen, but it happened to the patients of Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia. It became the world’s most haunted building due to the endless report of paranormal activities. And there is no doubt that this building is full of miserable souls which continue to haunt the place and the living. In the year 1863, Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was not a hell-like asylum. In-fact it was built to bring hope and restoration for mentally ill people. Headed and designed by a doctor, mental health advocate, and founder of the American Psychiatric Association, Thomas Story Kirkbride. It was undeniably a comfortable and safe place for the people who suffer from mental illness, but not until the 1950s when the number of patients was more than ten times the number of intended patients. Staff started to feel burnt-out, and patients were treated inhumanely opposite to the life they were supposed to live in the asylum. Patients became uncontrollable and often left naked, sanitation became less priority that leaves the bathroom smeared with feces, wallpapers started to peel off, and the building itself became like hell. But the destruction and madness inside the building and the uncontrollable patients were just one of the issues because there was another inhumane story that happened here. It was the story of Dr. Walter Freeman, a famous surgeon and the Father of Lobotomy, who killed most of the patients in the asylum for his experiments. The asylum became his training ground for experimental lobotomies. Thus, the patients were forcefully shackled to the walls, bathed with ice water, confined in the cage, electroshocked, and lobotomized with icepicks. The ice pick method involved slipping a thin icepick through the patient's eye socket to disconnect the connective tissue in the brain's prefrontal cortex. To fully disconnect the tissue, Freeman hammered the ice pick, which resulted in numerous deaths. For so many years of experimenting, more than 4,000 lobotomies were performed by him, and it only ended in 1994 when authorities found out the inhumane situation inside the asylum then forced it to shut down. No one knows the pain they experienced inside the asylum, that’s why their souls continue to haunt the place where they suffered as well as the people who visit the place. Numerous paranormal activities were reported, such as ghosts walking through walls, doors were closing by themselves, objects moving on its own, hysterical laughter, etc. But the most famous ghost story in the asylum is Lily. Lily believed to be the daughter of one of the patients in the asylum, she died at the age of nine, maybe because of the inhumane situation in the place. It is said to be Lily if balls are rolling along the floor, flashlights are switching on, a music box is playing, and if there are simultaneously horrifying sweet giggles. There are a lot more ghosts’ stories inside the asylum, and Lily is just one of them. As of now, Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is open to the public as one of the tourist destinations in West Virginia since 2007. However, last 2019 after the release of the horror film entitled "Clarita," many Filipinos became aware that there was a real incident of exorcism that happened in the Philippines. A demonic possession occurred inside the Bilibid Prison, now known as Manila City Jail was one of the worst cases in the world. It was also one of the untold terrifying stories in the history of the Philippines. Clarita Villanueva's life was tragic. She never knew her father, and at the age of 12, her mother died. At a very young age, Clarita was on her own and was so clueless about what might happen in her future. Yet she still wants to continue her life, so she decided to venture to the big city- Manila, and work there as a maid. Unfortunately, she was nowhere to go and became a vagabond, then soon after, she fell into the hands of prostitutes and became one of them. The club became Clarita's home. She learned the nightlife in the big city and was able to earn enough money to survive her daily life. But life was really unfair because, at the age of 17, she mistakenly seduced a plain-clothed police officer and got arrested. She was taken by the police to Bilibid Prison- a 300-year-old prison where many people had been tormented. And after several days of being imprisoned, Clarita's horror began. It was the 9th day of May in the year 1953 when she began experiencing being bitten by two unseen creatures. She got bitten on her neck, legs, and arms that were still moist with saliva. She described the creature she saw as a 10-foot dark man with curly hair all over his body, yet with angelic face and mustache. She was scared as hell, she was immediately taken to the jail's hospital, psychologist, journalist, doctors, other experts from all over the globe, but none of them succeeded to find a cure for her condition. The Mayor even instructed her to draw the invisible creature but every time she would try to draw them, the pencil would fly off or she would chew the paper and pencil. The horror of Clarita continues to the point that she would threaten other people, but with the help of a Protestant missionary pastor named Dr. Lester Sumrall, Clarita was cured and started to embrace God's love. It took three days to totally cure Clarita, and since then she had no attacks. She was able to live a normal life, she was married to a rice farmer in Bacolod, and they were gifted with two loving children. The demonic possession of Clarita has reached the interest of different countries and inspired several films and documentaries. But despite being a controversial topic of that time, it was then faded due to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
