A Grants Specialist is responsible for identifying, applying for, managing, and reporting on grant funding opportunities. This role involves working with internal teams and external funders to ensure compliance and maximize funding success.
- Research & Identification
- Identify suitable grant opportunities from government, private, and nonprofit sources.
- Stay updated on new funding programs, eligibility changes, and deadlines.
- Proposal Development
- Draft, edit, and submit compelling grant proposals, applications, and letters of intent.
- Collaborate with program, finance, and leadership teams to gather necessary information.
- Grant Management
- Track grant statuses, deadlines, and reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of applications, awards, and rejections.
- Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and submit timely grant reports, including financial and programmatic data.
- Ensure compliance with all funder guidelines and contract terms.
- Communication & Coordination
- Act as the point of contact with funders.
- Coordinate across departments to ensure deliverables are met.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Administration, Business, Nonprofit Management, or related field.
- 2–3 years of experience in grant writing, fundraising, or nonprofit administration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Grant Databases: GrantWatch, Grants.gov, Foundation Directory Online
- Project Management: Trello, Asana, Monday.com
- Document Creation: Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (especially Word & Excel)
- CRM/Donor Management: Salesforce, Bloomerang, Kindful
- Accounting/Reporting: QuickBooks, Excel, donor/funder reporting platforms
- Knowledge of nonprofit finance and budgeting
- Experience with federal grant applications (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOE)
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks (e.g., Uniform Guidance)
- Certifications (e.g., Grant Professional Certified – GPC)
- Experience in impact measurement or logic model creation
